For my global assignment, I chose to create an international business activity with the use of ePals.

The activity involved the students creating a product and presentation based off of the country selected (based off of their ePal). The students will first take a quiz to see how much they really do know about other cultures and what is appropriate or not appropriate. The students then create a product without talking to their ePal. They will interact with their ePal and ask questions about their culture and lifestyle. The students are given a worksheet with ideas and concepts to ask their ePal. After they have talked to their ePal for a week, the students will look back at their product and how they should change it based upon the culture they learned about. The students will also create a business presentation or commercial that will be respectful and engage the culture.

This lesson is considered global awareness because the students always think about themselves and how they would like a product but not about others who may have a different background. This gives the students an opportunity to learn about others around the world. It also allows students to find out why they should take in to consideration others and how they feel.

We will be completing this activity during our chapter on International Business. I feel global awareness goes hand in hand with international business. The students will first learn about international business and then complete this project to see how it relates to the real world and their life.

Jessica,

I also chose to create a lesson using ePals to involve the students in learning about other countries outside of their own. I feel that ePals is a safe reliable website to use for instruction in schools and that by communicating with a student from another country they will learn more about that country than if they were to read it from a book or research it online. I like your idea for a final project to create a business presentation or commercial to show about the culture of their ePal's country. Many students will never get the opportunity to travel around the world therefore this is a great way to have them become globally aware.

Jessica,

I also chose to use epals for my lesson! It seems like a very reliable and safe way for students to meet with other students from around the world.

I love the point you made when you said that you're students are focused on how they would like a product. It's so important that students are able to think from the perspective of someone else. I also think it's important that students begin to understand some of the cultural norms/differences in other countries.

Great lesson! It sounds fun!

I think its a great practice to have students evaluate what they already know (or think they know) about a subject at the beginning of a lesson, and then compare this knowledge to what they have learned during the lesson to see if there are any discrepancies. This helps demonstrate to students all of the information they have learned during a lesson and also that their assumptions are not always correct. For my global awareness lesson, I plan to ask my students to list their assumptions about the international students so that later, upon completion of the lesson, they can compare these to what they actually learned from their international partners.

I liked reading about your pre-assessment. I also was going to have students use ePals and take a pre-assessment to see how much they knew about another culture but I like the part you added with what is appropriate or not appropriate. I think that is a great lesson to teach with recognizing different customs and making sure students are respectful of those differences. Great idea!
