It took me a while to figure out why my Google Analytics account was not working with my edublogs site. Come to find that I need to become a supporter in order to use the service - AKA pay $40/year. I am extremely disappointed!

While I certainly understand the valid points made about "no free lunches," owning and protecting your data, etc., I also take issue with the way Edublogs went about their commercial shift. First, it would have been helpful and professional to notify all existing bloggers in the network of the change in advance via e-mail. First, it would have been helpful and professional to notify all existing bloggers in the network of the change in advance via e-mail. Secondly, I find the nature of the pop-up ads embedded as hyperlinks within existing blog posts, yet invisible to the logged-in blogger, particularly offensive. I can understand banner or sidebar ads outside the field, but modifying someone's text seems qualitatively different. Frankly, this unauthorized alteration of my work seems to me to be to be a violation of my Creative Commons license. I do not take issue with free services incorporating advertising, but I find this particular approach to be an untenable violation of the integrity of an author's intellectual property. I agree that hosting one's own blog is the only way to control its future, and I have moved mine to a paid host. While it may be within their rights technically, because of how they handled the conversion to their new terms, I will no longer recommend Edublogs to teachers with whom I work. Have you tried Eduspaces ? This is a free non-advertising site which uses Elgg (0.8 I believe). However, ownership of data was an issue last year when the folks running the site suddenly decided to shut it down giving the community 1 months notice.

Blogger is owned by Google which has much deeper pockets. Edublogs was fine up until recently. Just because something is fine today doesn't mean that they won't be totally different in the future. The revenue streams for these folks are drying right up.
Again, that's why I go the free and open source route. I'll pay the small fee for the server space up front. I know I can count on it. Like john said: I own the data and the tool!

John, Agree. I can't believe that there are people that think all of these Web 2.0 developers are publishing these tools out of the goodness of their hearts--eventually they will all have a commercial component. It remind me of the time a while back, I presented at NECC for 5 years and the exhibit halls were filled with the "next best thing"-- Riverdeep, Blackboard, Big Chalk, Classroom Connect, eboard, etc. They were all free---within a year 90% were GONE and the other 10% were subscription.…

True, there are sites that have less annoying ads, but I do think that the more intrusive, content ads are going to be more prevalent in light of the economic situation. Own the data, own the tool.

It's interesting that sites such as Blogger don't bombard you with ads, but Edublog does. Sites such as Wetpaint Wiki have ads which are a lot less annoying than the current Edublog model. And by the way, backing up content is essential under any circumstance.

All I have to say is "duh". Did anybody really think all these tools would continue to be viable and free? I've noticed several already gone and many more going to subscription. Do we really need eight Web 2.0 Timeline generators, for example? I'd agree with John, back up your stuff.
