It's learning stole my Saturday

I usually have my students record their English homework on it's learning. There's a record function in the text editor, and it is excellent. But, here I am - listening to my students read their English homwork on a Saturday! And, I'm enjoying it!

So, it has freed up more time in class to do other things besides hearing them read to me, but it has stolen my Saturdays! And I think that's ok!

Facebook courses

I am currently trialling a Facebook Course for HE students to experience Web 2 technologies. I have set up the course, but a student has joined as an administrator, which is not a problem at the moment as I am trialling this. However, it would be a problem if students are able to alter schedules and assessments if the course went live! Does anyone know how I can take this students off and prevent it happening again?

The other problem I have is that I wanted to link to the course from… Continue

Calling All Cars! Calling All Cars! I Need Some Advice From My Posse!

I need advice from my posse and I need it right away!

I've been asked to speak to a group of college profs in about 10 days. They want to hear about no more than FIVE emerging technologies that support online learning.

This is a wonderful opportunity to make an impact on the hearts and minds of people who can make a real difference in the ways their students interact with them online. The trouble is, we all know there… Continue

NECC09 in Washington, DC will feature LOTS of Second Life activity

Hey, ya'll. Just want to toss out there that one of my favorite networks, Second Life, will be getting a lot of attention at ISTE's NECC come June 27-July 1 this summer.

I'm helping facilitate two 3-hour workshops on the topic, a 3-day running Second Life Playground, and a Birds of a Feather. I'm also helping put together a BOF on the topic of my favorite new VW for kids, Quest Atlantis: I'll be a bizzy bee, for sure. You can see (and register for, if you wish!) all our workshop and… Continue

Tyrants of Academe

I just finished Jeff Jarvis’s WWGD. An excellent, if not perfect, read that I highly recommend to colleagues in education. There are some things missing, however, with his chapter on education. He didn’t go far enough.

I am thinking specifically about the role that certain institutions play in the hording of research. For example, when you click… Continue

With so much knowledge, how do you sort through it and share it with your students, peers, parents and community?

I've browsed the 200 pages of introductions over the past year and it's amazing all of the great ideas that are here. I share some of these on my own Tutor/Mentor Connection web site so that volunteers and students in non-school tutor/mentor programs might use these just as often, or perhaps more often, than do kids in inner city schools.

The… Continue

Take your pick of innovative ideas at Wisconsin education conference: Project Based learning, digital technology, games and learning, and more . . .

Interested in any of the following mini conferences near Milwaukee on April 20 and 21st?

(Number 2 seems interesting to me.)

The Wisconsin Charter Schools Association is hosting their annual conference in Waukesha at the Country Springs Hotel (about 20 minutes west of Milwaukee). I have to say, they have put together a pretty interesting conference, and they promise that all the sessions will be interactive.

Go to www.wicharterschools.org for registration… Continue

A Lesson on Learning

I have a grandson (actually, three grandsons and three granddaughters, but I digress already...) Grandson in the middle attends school in a large city district in another state. He called his Grandpa and me last Friday night on his own initiative; I don’t think his parents even know that he called us. He was just missing us, he said.

During the conversation, of course I had to ask how school was going. The boy just sighed. “It’s OK, but it’s getting hard. We’re practicing for the… Continue

By Lance Winslow

Many people spend hours watching and learning on Television. What a great teaching tool it can be. Maybe in the future we can use this platform with the technology upgrades along the way to help propel our teaching endeavors.

Currentely, there is the Discovery Channel, Science Channel, History Channel, Wings, Animal Channel and a host of others and they are indeed very interesting to watch.… Continue

Getting started ~ putting knowledge into practice

Following the excellent Weaving Technology conference that was held in Wagga, NSW, Australia last October I composed a few ideas regarding the thought or process or getting started with technology in the classroom.

I blogged about these ideas here on my main blog ~ Watershed.

Essentially, when starting out with technology in the classroom I feel it is useful to keep the following three rules of thumb in mind...

1. Choose… Continue

Maricopa Learning eXchange (MLX)

The Maricopa Learning eXchange (MLX) is an electronic warehouse of ideas, examples, and resources (represented as "packages") that support student learning at the Maricopa Community Colleges.

The key to MLX is it being a place for exchange of ideas. Anyone from anywhere can browse and search the warehouse. Each "package" is represented by a descriptive "packing slip" that… Continue

The PD Learning Curve

I think about the many times I attended professional development or training sessions as a teacher and how often much of it was done at the beginning of the year, during semester transitions or during staff development days throughout the year. Much like this image ironically titled "Creative Strategies for Professional Development," it was a lot of sit… Continue

Technology

Isn't technology wonderful? When it works. Ha! Here I thought I was a technology person. This class has really humbled me. Ning is way cool, but I'm still not too confident. Can't there just be one place everything can be synced to so you don't have to link to EVERYTHING? It seems like as soon as you learn about one cool thing and get going on it, you hear about something else. Whew. This ning seems like the best way to organize everything so far. Unless someone else has something else to… Continue
