Hamlet in Plain English

I thought for my first official post on this site I would entertain my readers and fellow teachers with a new way to look at William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Last spring I decided to turn Shakespeare’s world upside down by utilizing the “common craft” technique to storytelling. If you have not visited Lee LeFever’s website, please do now! Pass GO, collect your $200 and get to Common Craft!!!! Ken Rodoff, our technology coach at Springfield, introduced me to this site and we were both impressed by… Continue

Online Instructiion and Creative Writing

In the past six semesters I have used online courses in teaching EFL courses to freshman students. Blackboard and Nicenet were used as a supplement to in-class instruction. We used our PC's and internet connection from home. Students posted stories and poems that they read on the internet or in books and liked to share, and wrote short paragraphs related to the themes covered in class and textbook. I encouraged them to write for communication and not to worry about grammatical and spelling… Continue

Using Facebook with my students

As one of the trailblazers for using new technology at the college - (we prefer this phrase than guinea pig) ;) I started using Facebook to work with my students.

I wanted to get the students to upload the graphics they were designing to a facebook group to then allow the other students to see what wonderful creativity there was. This also allowed links to be shared, discussions to be used and also to invite ex-students now working in the industry in to the group and get them to… Continue

Innovations @ CES 2009 in Review

So after a two week hiatus from my blogspot, I thought I would share my review of CES 2009. If you have never been to the CES show in Vegas, to say it is overwhelming would be an understatement. I met lots of interesting folks and even had an opportunity to take a quick photo with The King himself. CES is the largest conference in the… Continue

Technology or Just the Latest Gadget

Certain applications such as Ning, iGoogle and NetVibes allow you to structure the manner in which you recieve information and network. These applications are helpful to avoid "tech overload", as each new day brings a newly touted technology to the forefront. The problem with many of the new technologies is that people beleive that each one is the new answer to making students computer literate in the 21st century. Eventually, some of the technologies will rise to the top, but for now, each one… Continue

Learning something new.

While at NECC and EduBlogger Con, I must say that I was completely overwhelmed by what is going out there in the ed tech space. There are so many leaders in our schools and classrooms who are doing amazing things. Web 2.0 tools are simply tools, but what I learned and observed by the many folks at EduBlogger was something that seemed to be revolutionary. We are truly seeing examples of our classrooms and teaching practices change as a result of teachers embracing new instructional strategies,… Continue

Grant Writing for Technology Integration

One of my goals is to incorporate more technology into my classroom. Unfortunately, as we have all found, money is tight. I am interested in finding grants and sources for newer technologies to be used in the classroom. I am very interested in the Tablet PC and have found several grant possibilities. Does anyone have any suggestions? What pitfalls have you found in the grant-writing process? I am really looking for suggestions...
