Web 2.0 for Administrators

I have been thinking lately about how Web 2.0 could enhance the lives of administrators and principals. Administrators are busy, overwhelmed with practical tasks required to keep the school functioning smoothly. What can Web 2.0 add? Here are my answers. Please help me by adding yours.

1. Blogging - administrator blogs can reflect on daily tasks or larger issues. They can also be a way to communicate to students, parents, the community.

2. Wikis - how often do you need to work…

Teaching is an Art

I’ve now begun the book study I’m doing with my two inductees; The Art and Science of Teaching by Robert

J. Marzano. The book study and attendant assignments, reflections, and journal

articles are structured to cover some important topics early in the year, like

goal-setting, instruction and assessment. However, it leaves…

Reframing School Dropout as a Public Health Issue

I wrote an article for my http://tutormentor.blogspot.com blog referring to an article written by a couple of health researchers. I'm not sure how good my comments are, but I encourage you to read the article by Nicholas Freudenberg, Dr.PH and Jessica Ruglis. You can find the link on my blog.

The writers provide statistics that show how the drop out problem is most severe in the nation's biggest cities. Since members of Classroom 2.0 come…

Learning through humour

Lots of material can be helped into the brain through humour, rhyme and music. I've just put up a few videos from Monty Python and Tom Lehrer. I've also linked to Flanders and Swann's "First and Second Law". Imagine - a song about the laws of thermodynamics! Tom Lehrer also has put the periodic table to music, and there is a splendid (copyrighted) flash animation of it here. And even Lehrer's "I'm spending Hanukkah in Santa Monica" is… Continue

Video Games: Friend or Foe

I little background here. I am 35 years old and I have grown up playing video games. I have had them all from PONG to Playstation to the Wii. I will always enjoy playing video games and am not ashamed of it. My 4 year old son also love playing video games (we do curb him playing time of course) and he is quite good at them. He is restricted to the Disney genre for obvious reasons and he plays the interactive learning computer games as well. He has gotten quite good at these games and is very… Continue

Educating the Net Generation

Net Generation students were born into the age of information technology. Their attitudes, expectations, skills and learning styles reflect their environment - which contrasts our own upbringing.

From my personal experience as an educator, I've outlined what I believe are the 7 key traits of the Net Generation:

1. Connected

Net Gen expect instant access to information. If they need to know something, they will Google it. They also need connectivity to their… Continue

Social Networking in Education

According to a recent US study by the National Schools Board Association, 96% of students aged 9-17 years, who have internet access, use social networking tools. The study was comprised of 3 surveys, an online survey involving 1277 students, an online survey of 1039 parents, and phone interviews with 250 school district leaders who make internet policy decisions. The study identified that students spend on average 9 hours per week… Continue

Collaborative learning in programming

I've been trying to construct a situation where many groups (in school) are working together to create an service, system or application for the Internet.

If you are interested in taking a risk where our pupils (my pupils are on secondary high-school/college level)will learn programming (PHP and MySQL) together I would be more than enthustiatic.

Please send me an email if you are interested!

Friday's Test

I had to take in my language arts class today. I think I did pretty good. This test seemed a lot easier than the other ones. I knew exactly what I was doing on every part. I don't know if it was easier or if she just made it that way, but either way I liked it. I think and hope I made an A.

No Title

Yesterday was a long day at school as per it was parent teacher day. The day was spent going over graphic organizers and homework. The rest of the evening until 7 I worked on my lesson plans for the next two days. Not being an official teacher even I was nervous about meeting the parents. My cooperating teacher was kind enough to introduce me as I have a role in the classroom. There weren't too many parents who came as my cooperating teacher says that many know the drill. After that night I… Continue

Music, Drama and Technology

So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to integrate technology into teaching music and drama to young children. I have found a couple good websites about interactive piano and other things but let me know if you have any interesting programs or websites that you have run across.

SAP unveils s.o.a.s. entrant

SAP is now the first major software company to launch an online suite of business management programs delivered as ‘software as a service.’ SAP joins Netsuite, salesforce.com and Google in delivering software over the web in an integrated package. While Google Docs is a simple package of applications focused on collaborative usage, SAP is focusing more on powerful business applications. The continuing development of the ‘software as a service’ model encourages me that there is great potential… Continue

Science Technological Teaching Strategies

As apparent in class, I have found that technology is a great resource that can be applied to the lesson plans of many school subject areas. Michelle Heywood and I worked together and decided that science, in light of early childhood education, was a great subject to incorporate with technological teaching strategies. We agreed that science should be very interactive and although it is a difficult subject to teach, technology offers many techniques that can make conveying the information… Continue

Benefits from Rheingold

Rheingold’s analysis of the human form evolving from tiny individual cells into a greater whole entity is the perfect analogy to use in describing the integration of technology into the classroom. As he stated, the internet has opened our world and allowed individual minds to become a whole. The internet is available to anyone who has the interest of utilizing it. It is a perfect mechanism to translate curriculum ideas, build social communities (which Rheingold also mentioned), and essentially… Continue

Technology in the Education of Science for Young Children

Science is an exciting topic that is difficult to instruct at an early childhood education level. With the incorporation of technology, this subject could potentially become more comprehendible for the young students. Stephanie Robbie and I decided to pose the question: “For our ED331 course, we have been instructed to research a "difficult to teach" topic for early childhood. We have been asked to contact a teacher and ask about any known technology to aid in the instruction of the content… Continue
