Collecting studies focused on the impact of Education Technologies

Gathering empirical evidence supporting the positive results that education technologies can help to deliver.

I’ve decided to try putting together an online collection of reports and studies that examine the use of education and instructional technologies, and how effectively they have been used to improve learning outcomes. I’ve had this thought from time to time, and last week I came across a couple articles that reminded me of the idea, and I’m ready to get…

Summer and Math

Happy summer everyone! Public schools are out and the summer has really kicked in. Some of you may be on vacation, and some may be involved with summer camps and summer schools. It never hurts to combine fun and relaxation with creative and productive learning. If you can find just 10 minutes a day for your kids to do some math, it would help them remember the things they have learned, and would make the next school year easier. Also, if your kids are a bit behind on any math…

The Future of Teaching is Learning

I really enjoyed Charles Leadbeater's - "We-Think" (see the cool video clip of its premise HERE). He really hit the nail on the head when it came to how the world was changing due to communicative technologies, Web 2.0 and the rise of the "amateur" and mass participation in innovation/ideas.

Today, watched for… Continue

New tool for planning

I am currently preparing a new module for a course. I have previously used spreadsheets and word processors. This year I have come across CompendiumLD and I am finding it is useful in organising ideas and supporting files. If you like working with maps rather than paragraphs then try it out. http://compendiumld.open.ac.uk/ It has some useful templates for providing a bit of structure to the planning process. It allows files from other programs,… Continue

Can I Learn Spanish Online For Free?

This week I’m checking out online applications that can help me learn introductory Spanish for free.

Being able to learn a language online is a nice example of the many types of solutions that today’s education technology makes possible.

I want to start learning Spanish so I can help my sons use it more at home – they both take Spanish in school, and would benefit from the practice. My goal this week is to search out…

Integrating Technology and Pedagogy in the Classroom

Among the many challenges that teachers encounters in working with TPACK, is the integration of technology and pedagogy. This component of TPACK appears to be difficult to identify when assessing a teachers' integration of technology, content and pedagogy. In a recent investigation of TPACK competencies among pre-service teachers in Tanzania, it was found that, majority of them could integrate pedagogy and content (ask students to make groups and discuss a given concept of a content),… Continue

Bias Against Texas Private Schools Continues

According to the National Center for Education Statistics 25% of all schools, nationwide, are private, serving 11% of all students. In recent public statements, Texas public educators show their dismissive, if not outright contempt for private schooling. So entrenched is this attitude that most in the Texas public school establishment don't realize the glaring bias.

The latest case in point was in the El Paso area, where seventeen Canutillo High School seniors who failed the…

Too hot to go out? Online ideas to keep bored kids (and teachers) busy over the summer…

Don't let your summer waste away, make a difference, make a change, or at least make it fun!

It's summer break and it's scorching outside. There are some days where you would rather just stay in and avoid the heat.
