VisuWords is a free online graphical dictionary that is an excellent resource for language development and language support. You can type any word into the searchbox or click on Random to view random words defined. The site then searches for related words and then produces a user-friendly diagram. Each node in the diagram is clickable to view a definition of that word or double click on the node to expand the search for that particular term. In the example… Continue

Digital Portfolios

This semester I have been granted extended leave to implement digital portfolios in our school. I have some assistance from Croyden Secondary College in Melbourne, Australia. This gave me the bases on a web site to start from but I have enhanced it. We are encouraging the students to report using the Victorian Essential Learning Standards http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/ but have included a section on career development.

Tech Byte: Technology Vision and Change

I was honored to present at the Technology and Teaching Conference last week in Bismarck (notes in previous post). I also had the opportunity to attend several great sessions by leaders in the field. I will be sharing some of the information I gleaned with you. Much of the material in today's Byte is derived from a session by Chris O'Neal who works at the University of Virginia. I'd like to publicly thank him for the insights and resources he presented. (More about Chris.)

Teaching Books

My first impression of this new site on Teaching Books http://www.teachingbooks.net/ is that in addition to being aptly named, it's a worthwhile resource for tying literature to learning.

Technological Advancement bridging curriculums

Recently, my Technology students with the use of Claymation, teamed up with the English and Language Arts students and animated Romeo and Juliet. It was a tremendous success. In all, there were over a dozen scenes with different facets of how the students interpreted the classic drama. Once the ELA students develop their scenes, with the use of construction paper and clay, the Technology students took pictures with the use of digital camaras. Once the… Continue

Open Office

I have not used Open Office a lot in the past, but have recently begun doing so. In using it on Windows, I am finding it to be very buggy. Is that others experience or is it just me?

Summer 2008

Well, I'm finally back in the groove of classroom 2.0. I'm working with the South Central Kansas Writing Project yet again this year and adapting to changes. We have decided to consolidate our technology applications and will be using a ning network instead of a separate site for wikis, blogs and photos. This way I will become more familiar with the technology and be more of a proponent of its use in the classroom.

I am also working for a short time for our Extended School Year… Continue
