New Blog--As If...

Hey. Some of you may know I'm blogging a bunch, and I'm headed down to the 'Non-Conference" of educational bloggers in Atlanta this coming Saturday. I recently added some posts in my primary blog, scottmerrick.net, about Second Life and realized that it is only appropriate that I keep those two lives separated, however comingled their developments may at times be.

So I've created the "scott merrick in second life" bloggie to keep up…

Friends/Collaborators Wanted

Summer is finally here (okay in three days summer will be here for us) and it's time to look toward summer ventures. Christine and I have connected with so many people online and would love to communicate this summer with anyone who teaches ages 10-12 and would be interested in a collaboration next year. We are looking to continue using our blogsite, creating wikis, and, our new favorite, skyping and webcam conferences. Any other ideas? Want to be a part of the excitement? Contact us here or at… Continue

Looking forward to NECC!

Hi All!

As many of you are, I'm looking forward to the NECC conference in Atlanta, GA. There seems to have been a flury of interesting posts on the blogsphere recently now that the schools year is wrapping up (more time). It will be interesting to see how some of those conversations continue through NECC and the rest of the summer.

...and in other happy news, my daughter just turned three and had one heck of a cool party with a few of her close…

Life-long Learning

Since yesterday was Father's Day, it seems appropriate that I reflect on my own father and his influence on who I am. I first heard the term "lifelong learner" several years ago as I became involved with educational technology. I think the term fits me perfectly. I am constantly acquiring new knowledge, working on new skills, and looking for ways to apply my new knowledge and skills to enhance my life and the lives of others. The tenements of being a lifelong learner require one to ask a lot of… Continue

Stepping Up to the Buffet

Hi Classroom 2.0'rs-
I just posted something on my blog with my two cents about the gender imbalance in educational technology leadership. Love your thoughts too!

Intro

I currently teach third grade. I have also taught first and fourth and have been an Instructional Technology Coordinator in a middle school. I feel technology integration is imperative in today's classrooms. I'm interested in learning more about Web 2.0 and its uses in the classroom. I look forward to learning more from around the world and across this great country of ours.

Connectivism

I am a very happy user of moodle as a VLE - my first love was WebCT and then moodle stole my heart. I am now starting to explore different learning theories to better understand how to design effective pedagogical materials for use within the VLE etc. I came across george Siemens connectivism "A learning theory for today's learner". Ref: http://www.connectivism.ca

Here is the conclusion from his…

Renewal

This looks to be a year of renewal for me. For the last 17 years I have taught various subjects to the MR population. When school started this past year I knew that I needed a change. I no longer felt the excitement that I used to feel. Thus started my year of self questioning. Thoughts went through my head that made me question whether or not I should stay in the field at all. I have some serious concerns about special education. But that will be for another discussion. After considering a…

The Power of Technology

This morning, before school began, Christine Southard and I decided to try out our new webcam. So Christine sent out an SOS asking for friends to help us play and we got a great response. We spoke first with Ginger, who graciously turned on her camera even though it was early morning in Kansas (You looked fabulous, Ginger). We played around with the camera and had fun. Then David J. checked in from Texas. At this point, after we figured out how to get David into our call, we realized the…

Will this replace Blogger?

The first question that I have is whether this service will replace Blogger for professional blogs. While many professionals are hesitant to use MySpace as their professional blog, Ning is likely to result in less hesitation.

At this point, I still love my Blogger sites, but with Blogger lagging so far behind other applications in the social tools and structures, I wonder how long I'll remain happy with them.

What do you think?

Entry #1: Tech Thinking

I've decided to use this blog to journal about technology and Web 2.0 tools in my classroom. As a mentor for the Florida Digital Educators grant program I am expected to conduct action research in my classroom. I plan to use these musing and posts to gather my thoughts and process my experiences toward that end. My apologies to any readers who wander by... this is truly going to be a working place for me... a work in progress that I can later shape.
