Adapting the Four Blocks Literacy Model to the 52 Minute Class Period

This year, I formatted my language arts class based on a modified Four Blocks Literacy Model in attempts to create a balanced literacy program that meets the diverse needs of all my students. Although the true four blocks model takes place in a single block class session, I am forced to teach my blocks throughout the week within 52 minute class periods. In a typical week…

Seat Pockets

With the help of my mother-in-law's superb sewing skills, I created seat pockets for each student desk in my classroom. I have five rows with five student desks in each row labeled with a number and a letter A1-A5, B1-B5, C1-C5, D1-D5, and E1-E5. I gave each row a different color seat pocket. I've found that this is an efficient way to form collaborative groups based on any data (MAP scores, high-low reading levels, personality, etc). All the kids know is that they are in the purple group…

Student Feedback

I have an area on a wall in my classroom I call the "Parking Lot." It's a place where students can "park" their ideas, concerns, or questions about my language arts class. Here are some of the student responses from my 8th graders currently in the lot:

  • Can we arrange our desks in a big circle?…

Est

A new term, a new inquiry topic, and a whole bunch of new opportunities to use technology have presented themselves at Castlemaine North PS.

Our inquiry topic this term is “Who and what have shaped Australia’s identity?” Somehow, I stumbled on the ABC 3 series “My Place”, which consists of 13 episodes set 10 years apart, from 1888 all the way to 2008. Each episode has a story about a 10 year old child who has been shaped by the preceding 10 years’ history. As well as the DVDs, there… Continue

6 Free Online Interactive White Boards

An update to last April’s post about free web-based IWBs.

Last April, I wrote a post about a few Online Interactive Whiteboards that I had checked out. That post remains one of my most popular posts, so obviously this is a topic of interest to a lot of people.

I figured it was time for an update, to check out new tools, and to see if there…

Differentiating Instruction in the Regular Classroom

Differentiating Instruction in the Regular Classroom by Diane Heacox is an excellent guide for all teachers. DI is a method of teaching all teachers should try to adapt in the classroom since every student learns differently. This book gives you templates and step by step instructions how to implement some of the practices into the room. DI at first seems unorganized and frustrating because many students are doing various activities based on their learning style and academic ability but once… Continue

21st Century Videos

The videos we watched for Computers in the Classroom showed me that today's students feel disconnected from and isolated within their own learning. I think as administrators and teachers become bogged down in "teaching to the test" in order to maintain passing rates or to score high on those tests, students become lost in a curriculum that is uneventful and meaningless.

Teachers and instructors need to find ways to engage their students. They need to make learning more…

Social Dilemmas

Chapter 8 addresses the use of technology and social media tools to solve social dilemmas. Given my field, the title caught my eye, especially the section entitled, "Self Help We Don't Approve Of." It goes on to described an online bulletin board set up by a teen magazine to talk about subjects important to teen girls. Eventually the magazine shut down the bulletin board because a group of girls were swapping tips on being anorexic. Although the bulletin board was successful and useful to…

"Conversation is King"

The following quote can be found on page 99 in Shirky's book:

"Conversation is king. Content is just something to talk about. The conversation that forms around shared photos, videos, weblog posts, and the like is often about how to do it better next time---how to be a better photographer or a better writer or a better programmer. The goal of getting better at something is different from the goal of being good at it; there is a pleasure in improving your abilities even if that…

NING moves to Cha Ching $$$

I read this and immediately thought... What does this mean for all those who have created NING communities in education? I for one love Ning and all it's capabilities, but I've created so many niche Ning communities that I'm not willing to pay to sustain all of them. While I understand the business model and can appreciate the efforts necessary in this down economy, it really does create a wake up call to think about. We saw this earlier last year… Continue

Seeking Virtual Youth Reporters For Youth Olympic Games

Using the Skype video recorder from VodBurner, I conducted a face-to-face interview with Erin Kennedy,… Continue
