Dan Pink, Drive, and being a parent who's just read it

I posted this earlier on my blog at www.gospacerace.com, but thought I'd add it here as well.

It’s a beautiful thing when ideas converge. When connections are made. It makes us believe that we are smart, and that our connective neural pathways are functioning as they should. Classroom teachers have long known this - that connecting ideas promotes learning. Chemistry relates to biology. Shakespeare relates to Atwood relates to Chomsky. Those… Continue

The importance of Graphic Organizers in K-12 Classrooms

As the name implies, graphic organizers are visual learning tools which facilitate the students’ ability to learn and understand better. However, the effectiveness of these graphic organizers depend on the involvement of the teachers and their responsibilities in explaining to students how to use such tools. Graphic organizers are suitable for students in all age groups; it helps them organize complex information into concise visual…

Rethinking Grades and Effort

Should effort be a part of a student's grade?

Earlier this week I attempted to answer this question with a brief response. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that such a big question was deserving of a big response, so here's my long answer.

I think effort is important, REALLY important. The reason that I had such a hard time answering this question is that I really, REALLY think grades are overrated. A good grade might get a child free…

AV-1 Salary & Education Survey Results

Nicely Done! Over 200 people -- better than 1/3 of all AV-1 members -- responded to the second AV-1 survey (Salary and Education). Significant sample data such as these enable us to feel comfortable suggesting that some of these statistics fairly represent the learning space microcosm, as a whole. (We expect that you will let us know otherwise!)

Later this week, we'll share some organizational demographics gleaned from your responses, however, today…

technology

So far I've learned a lot about technology tools in my Technology Tools class and have really enjoyed seeing what is out there. Google has so many options it seems endless ;) The biggest key to success and learning about them is setting aside time to experiment and try different methods and tools. I have started with the basic Google tools and have done pretty well. As I move along I hope to be able to learn about more of them while additionally becoming proficient. Unfortunately these aren't… Continue

Making Connections

Children learn best by making connections to something they already know. It's like connecting the wires of the brain from the platform that already exists to all of the new information that can fit the category in some way. The likelihood that the knowledge is going to become permanent is much more likely when connections are made.…
