I'm starting an unofficial and informal listserv for people interested in or working in charter schools across the country. The inspiration for this is the wonderful ISED listserv (http://www.milton.edu/ISED-L/), which has provided a great deal of guidance and support to me while working in independent schools. However, I am now working in the charter school world! I still refer to ISED-L, but I personally am looking to connect with others who are working specifically in charter schools.

The purpose of this list is to facilitate conversation and the sharing of resources. While my area of specialization is educational technology, this list is not limited to just tech talk. Teachers and administrators can post questions, job opportunities, grant writing tips, project collaboration opportunities etc. Let's share how we are all re-inventing the education wheel, so to speak!

Please pass this along to any you know who might be interested. I would really appreciate your help in growing this online community!World Languages and Culturestag:www.classroom20.com,2008-02-17:649749:BlogPost:1102202008-02-17T15:00:00.000ZLucy Grayhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/elemenous

I'm meeting with a group of middle school world language teachers on Monday to discuss technology integration ideas. Languages taught in this school district include: Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, German, Italian, French and Spanish.

This school district is also developing courses involving world cultures and global perspectives and are particularly interested in resources related to world geography, Africa, Australia, and world folk tales. I personally am interested, too, in any curriculum that's been developed around teaching global awareness.

If you are interested in collaborating with these teachers, mostly like for the next U.S. school year, please reply here.

Also, if you have any recommendations for teaching these languages, technology-based or otherwise, please feel free to post them here as well. Here are some of the bookmarks I've been collecting: http://del.icio.us/elemenous/foreignlanguage
A couple of updates:

1) I've changed the name of my blog from A Teacher's Life to High Techpectations. There's another Teacher's Life out there now, and frankly, the title was just booooooring. Not sure if I like my new one yet, but time will tell. You can find the blog at http://elemenous.typepad.com.
2) Last fall, I started a ning for teachers within my organization. This ning thing was new to everyone, and by keeping it private, we just didn't have the numbers to drive activity. I've opened it up to everyone and hope to focus on professional development (not just related to ed tech stuff). Everyone is welcome to join, but I'd love to reach out to more urban and/or charter school teachers.

Here's the link: http://usischools.ning.com/ and I hope to see you there!

3) I created two workshops for the Macworld Educator's Academy and you can find them at: http://lucygrayworkshops.wikispaces.com.

Hope someone finds this info helpful!
Julene Reed and I are teaching a workshop at NECC on global
Some of them are already seeded with material, but others are just
Excuse the multiple cross-postings on various listservs etc....

http://globaleducation.ning.com/

At the National Educational Computing Conference to be held in Atlanta, Georgia this June, fellow ADE Julene Reed and I will be hosting a
workshop on global collaboration. I plan on utilizing a variety of
tools and resources throughout this hands-on class, including Ning, a
service that allows one to establish a custom social networking site.

I've
made a few prior attempts at creating an online meeting space for those
interested in global collaboration which included the establishment of
a .Mac group and a blog. While I still plan on posting to these
resources, I think this environment might be more inviting because it
allows for the posting of photos, videos, and RSS feeds. Users can make
their own custom personal pages, contribute to discussion forums,
network with other like-minded individuals, and comment on these
features. I've been inspired by the success of Steve Hargadon's Classroom 2.0 and School 2.0 Ning communities, particularly by the forum conversations in the Classroom
2.0 one.

I
also hope that this will also serve as a hub for my fellow ADEs who
will be presenting at NECC on various global education topics( or anyone else for the matter), . Please
consider uploading any relevant files including presentation slides.
You can upload presentations slide to sites such as SlideShare and
Scribd, which I think, will give you the html code to embed here as a
video. If you need help with this, just let me know.. it's pretty easy.
Of course, you can probably also save slideshows as Quicktime files and
upload them directly, too.

Please let me know if you have any
questions... you can reach me via email at elemenous@gmail.com and via
I mentioned in the forum earlier that I found a cool link to ThinkFree in my new college alumni networking site... tonight I found something else that was interesting. It's the blog of another Beloit grad who is an innovation journalist/consultant and she has some interested innovation references in her blog's sidebar. She also blogs about this Innovation Bloggers Virtual Forum that will be held April 26. The content of both aforementioned links is probably more business oriented, but ... before I get skewered for mentioning business and education in the same sentence... I think educators should look to business to learn something about organizational change. Schools are unique animals, but I really think education needs to move forward into the 21st century.
