Skipper Rich Wilson, the only US contestant and the oldest skipper in the competition is in tenth place. At the start of the race there were 30 skippers. Now there are 12 remaining in the race. Rich is rounding Cape Horn today. Ironically today he was sailing in nearly the same position that he was in when his Great American boat capsized off the coast of Cape Horn in 1990. It was an uneasy feeling as he reports on the audio file that he posted in his podcast on the SitesALIVE! website.

In an interview with Yachtpals, Rich spoke about the reasons that he undertook this epic race.
YP: Would you say you sail more for the challenge or the pure joy?
Rich: There's a variety of reasons. Certainly there's a challenge, particularly this race, which is the biggest race of all, in my view. I also sail for the school program. If we didn't have the big school program, I wouldn't be here.
The purpose is to connect kids to the real world, because they'll be far more excited about the topics in class than they will be if they're just doing textbooks. http://yachtpals.com/rich-wilson-american-4013

Before the start of the Vendee Globe race, Rich spent many months preparing himself, the boat and the school program. He and I volunteered to do webcasts in New Zealand, Australia, Romania, the Philippines, China, and in the US where we virtually visited schools to tell them more about the voyage and give the students and teachers the chance to ask some questions. He had a webcast with Steve Hargadon in Elluminate that is still archived on this site. He gathered an incredible 'Team of Experts' who extend the voyage in many directions with their own career experiences and expertise. Students are invited to ask these experts questions as well. And as Rich is at sea, he and his team are using web 2.0 technologies to connect with the global audience via his http://www.sitesalive.com website, Twitter ( http://www.twitter.com/Rich_Wilson , Facebook Gabcast , the http://www.sitesalive.com website where Rich posts blogs and ship logs, answers questions that students/teachers send via e-mail, and uploads videos to YouTube and TeacherTube. He invites students to send him email via his website and to send in projects that they have created as a result of following a part of the voyage. At the moment, my students are plotting points in google earth. Position points are available on his website.
Rich has 7251 nautical miles to the finish line in Les Sables d'Olonne. I hope that you will join me and others around the world in following him and cheering our 'teacher at sea' in in this epic race! If you come 'on board' I'd enjoy hearing about your journey. Thanks very much!
We followed him in 2001, when he sailed from NY to Melbourne, AU; in 2003 when he sailed from Hong Kong to NY and in 2004 in the Transat 2004 from Plymouth to Boston. Though the students from those years are well into college now, their younger siblings and friends share the same excitement as they did several pre-skype years ago! As we think about the upcoming voyage, we have written letters of encouragement to Skipper Rich on the Vendee Globe Junior site. We looked at all of the competitors boats on the Vendee Globe site and some have begun to design their own boats in Scratch. http://www.scratch.mit.edu
We've create voicethreads to introduce ourselves to students who will follow the race through Vincent Mespoulet's Vendee Globe group on his site http://horslesmurs.ning.com/group/vendeglobe2008 where a wonderful group of innovative teachers will share this experience together. And Sharon Betts Classroom Braids project focusing on the Vendee Globe will help my students and me to learn more about how the voyage can be shared in a collaborative wiki project; something that is still very new to me.
Even my kindergarten students have been sharing their favorite boating experiences and using their drawing skills in Kid Pix to retell their own boating memories. Their voicethread to come soon! By the end of the Transat 2004, all 270+ kids in the classes had been a part of the team that cheered our teacher at sea to the finishline with drawings, audiofiles, questions, and even lego sailboats. As the excitement of the upcoming race draws near, we look forward to meeting new friends and sharing the educational field trip of the decade with our teacher at sea.
It was very exciting for me to see Rich WIlson, our teacher at sea, in the official Vendee Globe photo today in Paris. He and 29 other skippers will be racing in the Vendee Globe in November 2008. While he is sailing he will connect with students and teachers across the globe, posting blog entries, videos, and photos. He and a team of experts on shore will answer students' questions. He looks forward to having teachers across the globe 'on board' for this epic learning adventure.
As he created his game, he shared sketches and preview posts so that the kindergarten and first grade students could see his progress and give him feedback via audio files. It was great fun for the students to participate in the process. They will be delighted to see the new game uploaded when they return back to school in September.CHECKS_JADE.mp3The Vendee Globetag:www.classroom20.com,2008-08-20:649749:BlogPost:1790932008-08-20T01:00:00.000ZLorrainehttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/Raine22

I've been posting about the Vendee Globe for a few months now. I'm hoping that in November 2008 when the sailors leave from France, that students and teachers around the planet will join together to follow this voyage and most importantly to share in this learning experience together. Ten years ago I would never imagine writing this blog post. It was in the past 9 years that I have appreciated the opportunities that are available for teachers and students to share a learning experience. The story unfolds by the hour, and although there are lesson plans and objectives, real world adventures are unpredictable and incredible opportunities for students. Although only one person will be on the Great American 3, there's room for thousands to join in from every place on the planet. Can you imagine the possibilities?Transat Artemistag:www.classroom20.com,2008-05-23:649749:BlogPost:1440662008-05-23T11:30:49.000ZLorrainehttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/Raine22

Skipper Rich Wilson looks on as students walk down to the cockpit of the Great American 3 before it sailed in the Jacques-Vabres race from Le Havre, France to Bahia, Brazil. Since 2001, when Skipper Rich Wilson headed out from Chelsea Pier to Melbourne, AU, my students have followed him on his ocean voyages. We went to http://www.sitesalive.com website to track his position, check the weather, send him questions and listen to his audio reports each day to hear what it was like to be way out there in the middle of the ocean. Before the introduction of Skype, when it was less common to connect so easily with people abroad, we had satellite phone calls from Rich in the middle of the South Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. As he sailed, he told us amazing details about the flying fish, the moonbow, the Aurora Australis, dolphins that swam by the boats, and the absolutely beautiful albatross. Students rooted him on as he attempted to break the record of the Mandarin, a clipper ship that sailed back in the days of the Australian Gold Rush. Students wanted to know exactly where Rich was each day. The excitement mounted as a teacher from Melbourne told us details about what it was like to live in Melbourne and what he might see when he finally arrived after his long voyage. One of my students aunts lived in Melbourne and took pictures of the boat as it came in to Port Philips Bay. A sign that we sent over to Melbourne greeted Rich and Bill Biewenga as they stepped off the Great American II. The students were so proud to see the skipper holding the banner that they made. He broke the record and they were right beside him as he made history!
We followed Rich again when he sailed from Hong Kong to New York. As he sailed we corresponded with a student in Hong Kong, a class in Florida, a college teacher in Liuzhou, China, two teachers in Italy and a teacher in Denmark who were also following the voyage. It was fun to share this experience with emails to our new friends. When Rich arrived in NYC I joined other teachers and students on a tugboat to watch the Great American II as it arrived back in Chelsea Piers with the fireboat spray greeting him proudly as he crossed the finish line near the Statue of Liberty-- once again beating the record of a clipper ship...this time it was the Sea Witch that sailed back in the days of the China Tea Trade. I remember looking out in the distance for this very very tiny boat and wondering in amazement how he and his crew traveled all of those miles. It was incredible!
In 2004 once again the students followed Rich as he sailed. This time he wasn't racing against the records of clipper ships though. He was racing against the other boats in the Transat 2004. Wow, was that exciting! Just hours after he left Plymouth, his mast broke and he had to return to the start of the race. Never one to give up, he and a team fixed the mast and he arrived second place in Boston. I remember watching the Great American II as it sailed into Boston Harbor. The winds were strong and the Great American II was sailing like an eagle back home. An unforgettable experience for my students who were standing at the pier, ready to great their teacher at sea.
As Rich prepares for the Vendee Globe, around the world alone, we are once again looking forward to following his inspiring voyage . The excitement of this global learning adventure combined with all of the web 2.0 technologies for collaborating with others will connect us not only with Skipper Rich Wilson at sea, but with all of the students and teachers who join in to particpate in this incredible learning opportunity. You can hear Steve Hargadon's interview of Skipper Rich Wilson in the videos. I've also uploaded a video of Rich speaking with students in Le Havre and a commentary by Ewan McIntosh in his involvement with following Skipper Rich in the Vendee Globe. To prepare students for this race, we have used Google Earth to look closely at the continents he will sail by. We've designed a whole fleet of sailboats in Scratch and figured out how to sail them across our screens. And we've brainstorned very long supply lists in excel about what we might like to bring with us if we were going to be at sea more than 100 days. How can you envision incorporating web 2.0 technologies into this once-in-a- lifetime adventure?
