This week we looked at web 2.0 technologies. We were able to look at specific ones and figure out how they would be useful in the classroom. My group specifically looked at Active Allowance. My group specifically looked at Active Allowance. This website is a great way to teach children how to budget their money and really learn the value of a dollar. It also allows the children to see progress charts of how they are doing and really make it easy to see why they earn or do not earn money. This could easily be used to distribute and earn classroom money that could be redeemed for a number of different things such as prizes, extra computer time, or even something like a day at the teacher's desk. As long as you put a little thought into it, it could be very helpful. There were also many other web 2.0 technologies that could easily be tied into a lesson and really help to extend the learning in the classroom. With an open mind most things can help extend the learning.Acceptable Use Policytag:www.classroom20.com,2009-03-24:649749:BlogPost:3142342009-03-24T20:15:44.000ZJulia Countshttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/JuliaCounts
This week we had to create acceptable use policies. These are very important to have whenever you are working in a classroom where the children have internet and computer access. I can still remember growing up every year we had this important book that we had to take home and go over with our parents before we were allowed to use the internet at school, it was a long and very detailed acceptable use policies. Many school systems have these in place such as this one. So when creating my own acceptable use policy I tried to think back to the ones of my past and also I tried to think of very common sense things that should be included. In my AUP I tried to stress the importance of following the rules and then also what the results would be if they did not follow it. My AUP is made up in the format of a contract and so if any of it is violated throughout the year I can simply go to my file and pull out the form that the child has signed. My AUP has simple and very reasonable rules that should not be hard to follow and will be posted around the classroom so the children won't forget throughout the year. My AUP is not forgiving, if you mess up once you lose your privilege, it may seem harsh, but I think it is appropriate because it helps stress the importance of following the rules.Inspiration kidspirationtag:www.classroom20.com,2009-03-10:649749:BlogPost:3068382009-03-10T14:40:26.000ZJulia Countshttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/JuliaCounts
This week we looked at a lot of different types of software that could be used in the classroom. Kidspiration is very useful for making mind maps, activities involving writing, or a variety of other things. What makes kidspiration great for classroom use is the fact that it will talk you through everything and explain what each icon means or what each picture is. It engages more senses and helps children associate different words with pictures and the spelling of the particular word. This website has a short tutorial and some of the different ways that kidspiration can be used http://www.vickiblackwell.com/kidspiration.html. We used kidspiration this week to make a web of our family and friends, we then went into the writing mode and wrote a short note or prayer for this person. While this activity was fairly simple it made you get accustomed to the software and it made you take a moment to remember why you were thankful for certain people. It was a good way to make you remember those most important to you while still at the same time exploring a software that could one day be used in your classroom.character posterstag:www.classroom20.com,2009-02-24:649749:BlogPost:2963412009-02-24T04:23:28.000ZJulia Countshttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/JuliaCounts

In class last week we created these character posters using a picture of ourselves using Microsoft excel and then putting a word and it's definition on the poster. I really enjoyed this project because it made us think about what different emotions a picture could convey to people. This project also allowed for a lot of personal touches while still being under a specific set of guidelines that we had to follow, it was controlled freedom, which is an essential part in any activity you do in a classroom. Being able to make character posters will come in very handy in my own classroom. Since I plan teaching in third or fourth grade this may be a little hard for the children to complete themselves, but I could very easily use character posters to do a child spotlight or child of the week. The child would have to provide a picture and pick out a word to describe them in the picture. Then we could decorate the room with them and the children could take them home at the end of the year. This also encourages the children to find synonyms for a word they would normally use like cool, awesome, or funny. This technology could also be used to make posters on the different historical figures we would talk about throughout the year and then as we discuss one person we could hang their poster up and leave it up for the remainder of the year which would be a sort of constant reminder to the children as to what that person did and those could be reused year after year. It could also be used to make posters describing the seasons, character traits, and holidays. The possibilities as to what you could do with this technology is endless if you just take the time to think about your different options.technologytag:www.classroom20.com,2009-02-17:649749:BlogPost:2935722009-02-17T15:46:46.000ZJulia Countshttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/JuliaCounts
Technology has always been something that has been very present throughout my life. In fact my dad built our first home computer using different parts from old computers they had at work. But before we even had a computer on of the ways that I used technology the most was the one and only Nintendo. Then Nintendo was a gaming console that my brothers and I would spend hours playing against each other on. Whether we were trying to stop the zombies from eating our neighbors, save all of Beethoven's puppies, or just get the Looney Toons through the obstacle course, we wouldn't quit until we had succeeded. Our parents could have cared less about the Nintendo, but to us it was the greatest thing ever, especially on cold days where playing outside was only fun for so long. Now Nintendos have been replaced by xbox's and ps3's and other various gaming systems and it's only been about twelve or so years since I was playing one and that just goes to show you how much technology can change in a lifetime.tests, tests, teststag:www.classroom20.com,2009-01-27:649749:BlogPost:2732162009-01-27T02:14:35.000ZJulia Countshttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/JuliaCounts
So I just took two little personality tests and I must say it was an interesting experience. Most of the personality tests that I have ever taken have been about what my personality color is or what type of cheese represents my inner being, but I really found these tests very revealing. I did have a problem with the PLSI test because in two of the sections I had an even split of 6 and 6 and it didn't really address what to do in that situation and so I don't know if my profile is accurate as it…
So I just took two little personality tests and I must say it was an interesting experience. Most of the personality tests that I have ever taken have been about what my personality color is or what type of cheese represents my inner being, but I really found these tests very revealing. I did have a problem with the PLSI test because in two of the sections I had an even split of 6 and 6 and it didn't really address what to do in that situation and so I don't know if my profile is accurate as it could be. This test did hit some things head on though. For instance I do hate missing out on things, I find that often times I would rather be sitting in someone else's room doing nothing rather then in my own room. For the most part I enjoy other people being around even if we're not doing anything, because then I don't feel like I'm missing anything. The multiple intelligence test I found much more interesting though, my highest score was in body and kinstetic and I never would have guessed that. Also my mathematics score was lower than I would have expect, I never had a problem with math and it just seemed odd to me. I think what suprised me the most about these tests though are that probably 3 or so years ago I feel like the numbers would have been completely different. These tests have helped me to examine how I have changed and how I am still changing. Taking these tests will definitely help when I am thinking about different lessons and things I am planning. Often times I tend to think of hands on activities to do, but I am often lacking in things such as writing assignments and other things, that may not have as much of an art and crafts feel to it. These tests are very good for making a person do some self evaluating and I would recommend them to everyone to take and just learn a little about themselves.
