As a fun activity in the short time we had between the end of PSSA's and the beginning of Marking Period 4, I challenged my 7th grade Mechanicsburg Middle School Pre-Algebra kids to research and create paperslide videos relating to a topic they had ALREADY learned during the year. Prior to beginning, I showed the students what a paperslide video was, how it was made and what it should look like by USING paperslide examples.

Prior to beginning, I showed the students what a paperslide video was, how it was made and what it should look like by USING paperslide examples.

I allowed the students to create their own groups of 2 or 3 and gave them a instructions and a copy of the rubric. They had to choose a topic and report it to me before they began their work. They had 3 days IN-CLASS (no homework...they loved that) to gather their details, create their paperslide images, create a script and practice their presentations and one day to video tape the one-take video.

ALL students were super excited about using technology (Flip Cameras) to create a project. They all worked well together; they had to communicate who was doing what slide and what the slides should look like, they had to agree on what their script should say and, most important, they all worked together to make double sure their information and examples were correct!

This was my first attempt at using the paperslides as an activity. With minimal intervention, the groups used their time wisely in class, they worked well together as groups and created some very good first-try productions! Please share any experience with this activity or similar assignments you have tried in YOUR classrooms!
Flipping the Classroomtag:www.classroom20.com,2012-03-07:649749:BlogPost:8140382012-03-07T01:14:50.000ZMichael Morrethttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/MichaelMorret

I would like to preview the first math chapter my Pre-Algebra students will see next year in Algebra. There are going to be tons of questions and lots of adjustments once the flipping begins but I think trying this method out NOW will help me to decide if I want to go all out and flip my entire day next year! I've started putting together a proposal to present to my principal and assistant principal to get their take on my idea. I've accumulated many benefits to converting my class to a flipped one and the deltas I've thought of can be controlled with minor impact. I've talked to our Math department head and he seemed hesitant to throw his hat into my corner because I believe he is comfortable with "the way things have always been done" and the success those methods have produced.
