I didn’t realize this application was available. In the past, I used Weebly or Shutterfly to host a classroom website.

This week, I was instructed to try a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) for my coursework. I found one that was interesting about hunting.

“The overall goal of this course is to engage you in learning about how wildlife management and recreational hunting play a role in the evolving face of conservation.

Together we will look at the emerging face of hunting today and the modern models of conservation. In doing so, the importance of ethics in guiding management decisions, hunter choices, and the surrounding politics will be presented. We encourage you to reflect on how the use and enjoyment of natural resources has an impact on your communities and how you may get involved and participate in its wonder.” https://class.coursera.org/perceptivehunting-001/wiki/Course_Guide_%2F_Syllabus

This MOOC is offered by the University of Wisconsin-Madison via Coursera. It is in a four week format that spanned January 26 to February 22. However, the course materials are available until March 22 for those that need more time to finish the readings, videos, discussions, quizzes, and hands-on learning. At the end of the course, participants receive a Statement of Accomplishment if they successfully complete the quizzes.

I very much like the format of this online learning. The format of the course is very straight-forward and easy to understand. All the information and directions are concise and laid out in a simple to follow method. The links worked when clicked upon. The reading is available each week for learning; it's listed for the students instead of students having to search the web for appropriate resources. The course facilitator gives the students an avatar survey for immediate feedback and to prompt discussions. The weekly videos provided are helpful for the visual learners and spark your interest in the subject matter.

In this format, I can see constructivism, cognitivism, behaviorism, and brain-based learning educational theories.

The only challenges I can foresee with this format are computer/technological issues at home. Otherwise, this is a fabulous way to learn and I hope this format carries over into professional development for teachers in the future.
5.5 Virtual Realitytag:www.classroom20.com,2015-02-09:649749:BlogPost:10526272015-02-09T00:54:30.000ZMrs Kimberly Andersonhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/MrsKimberlyAnderson

For this assignment, I had to research Virtual Reality (VR) based activities in the classroom. Since I was "for" the use of it because I think it can be very effective and engaging in the classroom, I had to research "against" using it. I found it challenging to research the "other side" because there is so much information about how to use it in the classroom. I feel that all the reasons not to use VR were the same as using technology in general such as: cost, support, less human interaction, hardware or software difficulties, training, etc. At first I thought cost was going to be the major issue because I thought that each student needed the expensive goggles to make VR work. I learned that VR doesn't require the goggles. I also learned that Google invented a disposable cardboard google that uses a smartphone for a similar experience. I think that each day there are new technological advances that can be applied to the classroom. Therefore my thoughts have not changed after my research.
4.7 Social Networking and Digital Citizenshiptag:www.classroom20.com,2015-02-02:649749:BlogPost:10510332015-02-02T00:53:30.000ZMrs Kimberly Andersonhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/MrsKimberlyAnderson

During this topic I learned several new classroom strategies about social networking and digital citizenship. I didn’t realize that there were so many ways for teachers to implement social networking in the classroom. While researching I found a great site called Twiducate. It is a site created by teachers for the classroom. On Twiducate, students enter the class code, post their projects, and comment on each other’s work. Students must adhere to the digital citizenship, which was the second strategy that I learned this week. Digital citizenship has nine components: etiquette, communication, literacy, access, commerce, law, rights & responsibility, health & wellness, and security. Teachers must instruct students on digital citizenship and post them in the classroom as a reminder.
Acceptable Use Policy - Technology in Schoolstag:www.classroom20.com,2015-01-21:649749:BlogPost:10491402015-01-21T23:54:28.000ZMrs Kimberly Andersonhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/MrsKimberlyAnderson

Marzano’s Nine Best Instructional Practices help teachers like me plan effective and engaging lessons. With Marzano’s the nine practices are: 1. Setting Objectives & Providing Feedback, 2. Reinforcing Effort & Providing Recognition, 3. Cooperative Learning, 4. Cues, Questions, & Advance Organizers, 5. Nonlinguistic Representations, 6. Summarizing & Note-taking, 7. Assigning Homework & Providing Practice, 8. Identifying Similarities & Differences, and 9. Generating and Testing Hypotheses. I find it helpful to look at a lesson plan and figure out how to rewrite them to include a best practice. Bloom’s Taxonomy helps me to think about my lesson’s objective and how I am asking the students to learn it. With Bloom’s, the type of thinking and learning required to complete an assignment is ranked from Lower Order Thinking Skills to Higher Order Thinking Skills. For example, memorizing facts would be a Lower Order Thinking Skill whereas creative or inventive thinking would be a Higher Order Thinking Skill. As a gifted teacher, I am required to use HOTS in my plans. Combining Marzano and Bloom is the ideal that I need to strive to achieve in all my lessons. I can improve by including technology in my plans to be more effective. The easiest way to share this information is by sharing lessons at planning meetings. My team and I use a web-based lesson planning software called Planbookedu. The most important information that I can share with my teammates is to try to think about the lesson’s objective and consider reworking the plan to include a Best Instructional Practice and HOTS.
Blog vs. Wikitag:www.classroom20.com,2015-01-11:649749:BlogPost:10476432015-01-11T13:45:25.000ZMrs Kimberly Andersonhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/MrsKimberlyAnderson
