One of the breakout sessions I was most excited to attend at last month’s Campus Technology conference was the one titled, “We All Have iPads … Now What?”. This session was offered by key participants in Seton Hill University’s Griffin Technology Advantage project, which I had written about in this article earlier that month.

This iPad rollout struck me as an exemplary case of doing this sort of thing right in the higher education setting. This is a very well thought out project, with robust executive support, and clear directives.

I had the good fortune of attending an event described as a “Conversation With The Future” at the recent Campus Technology 2011 Conference. There were three of these special sessions offered, each with a senior leader from a different major player in the technology industry. Attendees were encouraged to participate in the dialogue, and each seat had a microphone available to facilitate this.

The session I attended was hosted by National Technology Officer and Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft Education, Cameron Evans, who is responsible for shaping and executing Microsoft Corp.’s technology and policy strategy in U.S. Education.

Insights & Observations
During this dialogue, a number of concepts and revelations came up that I wanted to share here. Following is an assortment of selected ideas and insights about today’s and tomorrow’s technology environment (please note that I have taken the liberty of expanding on some of Mr. Evans’ comments, these statements are not verbatim). Below that is a summary of some of the projects Microsoft has in place to help students become tomorrow’s technologically-enabled leaders.

Mobile Applications & Devices: Evans made the observation that it’s really not about the device being mobile, it’s about people being mobile. The devices will keep changing, while the desire for increased and enhanced mobile functionality will persist. It’s important that we keep that in mind as we strive to plan for future applications and device requirements.

Microsoft is partnering with chip vendors to expand on the “system on a chip”, enabling the running of windows on any device that has the chip in it, and this really could be any device – household appliances, toys, your car, and so on.

I’m excited about this year’s Campus Technology conference for several reasons. In addition to the usual variety of Break Out Sessions, and Technology Seminars, there’s an opening keynote by Michael Wesch (known to many through his wonderful ”Web 2.0 … The Machine is Us/ing Us” and “A Vision Of Students Today” YouTube videos).

To top it all off, I’m presenting this year - my session will be on Thursday (from 9:45 to 10:45), and is titled, “Using Popular Social Networking Tools In (and Out of) the Classroom”.

In this Break Out Session, I’ll be discussing …

How blogging about various social networking tools and ways in which they are being used in education produced plenty of great examples of the instructional application of these technologies through reader comments.

Many of the uses of Twitter and Facebook that readers shared in the aforementioned comments, as well other uses I’ve learned about and shared here.

Tips on how to get started with Twitter, and with the use Facebook for class groups and for your own ‘teacher page’.

Various resources to help educators learn more, and get off to a good start with their own efforts to use Facebook or Twitter in the course setting. Lastly, I’ll be introducing several education-specific social networking tools available on the Internet.

After the presentation, I’ll make the materials available here for download. At nearly an hour, this presentation is a lot of information, so I’m thinking about repurposing some of this content and publishing it in smaller chunks (hmm … perhaps a “Facebook (or Twitter) in the Classroom” online workshop could work out nicely?)

Last year’s conference was my first, and I enjoyed it immensely. I shared some of what I learned in some of the sessions and seminars in this post. I also wrote “Steven Laster’s 8 Factors for Successful IT Management“, after being inspired by the Harvard CIO’s mid-conference keynote. I’m really looking forward to sharing some of the exciting and innovative uses of technology that I’ll be hearing about this week.

If any of you happen to be attending, I hope you’ll stop by my presentation (or just stop me in the hall if you happen to recognize me) and say hello!
8 Great Free Digital Presentation Tools For Teachers To Try This Summertag:www.classroom20.com,2011-07-21:649749:BlogPost:6840792011-07-21T12:30:00.000ZKelly Walshhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/KellyWalsh

Last week we started looking at rollouts of iPads in schools by searching out, reading, and summarizing findings in articles discussing these types of programs. This week we continue our examination of this topic by sharing take-aways from this excellent article in the March/April 2011 Educause Review. Educators Mary Ann Gawelek, Mary Sparato, and Phil Komarny from Seton Hill University wrote this highly informative overview of the recent introduction of iPads at their university.

Objectives
What was Seton Hill out to accomplish with this effort? The program had among it’s principle objectives:

Increased student engagement in learning

Widespread adoption and use of mobile technology, providing instant access to information

Creating a teaching and learning environment that goes beyond the traditional classroom

Enhancing creative and critical thinking through the development and use of interactive teaching strategies

Displacing some textbook costs by moving to less expensive electronic texts

Getting The Environment And Personnel Prepared
The article shares a wealth of information about some of the keys to positioning an effort like this for success. First among these is the proper mindset for both leadership and faculty. ... READ FULL ARTICLE
iPads In Education – How’s It Going So Far?tag:www.classroom20.com,2011-07-11:649749:BlogPost:6757772011-07-11T12:30:00.000ZKelly Walshhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/KellyWalsh

There’s no doubt the iPad is a hot topic in education technology today. Just about every week, my preconfigured Google Alerts deliver stories about schools that have decided to provide iPads to their students. With this trend on the rise, the question arises as to how well this investment is paying off at schools that have taken the plunge.

This week I decided to do a little web research to learn more about this topic. Searching for phrases like “ipads in our schools what worked what didn’t” immediately returned a number of relevant articles. Naturally, I’m sharing my findings here, and hope to encourage a dialogue with readers to learn about their experiences and insights.

Naselle High School – teachers and students motivated and engaged
The first article I came across was this one, about the rollout of iPads at Naselle High School in Washington state in the US. Here are a few highlights from the article that stood out for me:

They put some solid effort into into implementation planning. They did things like loading the iPads with many education-specific apps that did not require Internet access, and offering a $50 per year insurance policy to parents to help cover any possible damage to the iPad.

These statements from students: “Being able to be paperless, not having a lot of loose files in my binder, and best of all, the feeling of having something awesome.”; “The iPads make it easy to look up words and cut down on all the stuff you have to take home for math. You don’t have to take home your paper, calculator and math book. Now, we just take home our math book and iPad.”

Instructors at my school have often asked if there was an easy way they could turn off Internet access on the computers in our computer lab classrooms.
This year, I’ve written frequently about popular social media tools, and education-specific social networking apps. I’ve also noticed increasing coverage of this topic in the media recently. Maybe it’s just me paying more attention to it … or maybe it signals an increasing acceptance of these types of tools as legitimate and effective resources for the classroom.

Social networking tools aren’t going away any time soon, they appear to be here for the long term. But do these kinds of applications really belong in the classroom? I think they do, and here’s a few reasons why:

7 ways in which “social learning applications” can play an impactful role in education:

Engagement: Using social media and networking tools obviously has a social aspect to it, and it requires proactive effort on the part of the user. In other words, using these tools to communicate and interact requires a student’s active engagement. Socialization also provides opportunities for emotional engagement (this article from The Chronicle discusses the importance of emotional engagement as part of the social learning process).

In his role as Instructional Designer at The Home Depot Inc, James Hill designed and developed training programs and performance improvement tools for front-line sales employees. He has also designed learning for the transportation industry and military.

What follows is a brief interview between James and Maestro eLearning, as a part of a new series called Trainer Talks. This series, which will be published on various influential blogs, explores the difficulties of being a trainer and how to overcome them, along with tips and advice to make training more effective and more engaging.

Q. How have 21st century technologies (e.g. Internet, software, etc.) helped you?

Twenty-first century technology has really helped me as an instructional designer by opening up multiple design options. When I started in the industry we were limited to traveling facilitators delivering paper based training materials or very basic computer based training burned onto CD/DVD.

Now I have multiple design and delivery options available to me. I can design web based training that can be delivered across the globe or I can design blended solutions with facilitators delivering lecture interspersed with interactive simulations and knowledge checks. This has allowed me the freedom to step outside of the box and really look at a problem without the limitations of a delivery method.

In the past, a teacher telling kids how to spend their allowance money might be promptly put in her place by the PTA. Money matters were personal, and to be kept within the family. With the increasingly difficult financial conditions bought on by recession and other fiscal challenges in the US and abroad, it would be a great time for schools to help to give our kids a fighting chance. In recent years, many academics have pushed for the introduction of financial literacy into the school curriculum.

The need to educate our kids about money is simply greater than ever. Here’s 10 reasons why.

1. They don’t know enough. Studies by the Jumpstart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth have shown that many young people have little understanding of finance and economics. They are spending and borrowing without knowing that interest builds up, or that credit cards aren’t free money.

2. They are starting younger. The weekly-allowance system is used in many families. Five dollars for the candy store may not seem so bad, but pre-teens stretching $25 over one week will need a bit more guidance.
