Some of my students create podcast on units. I have only had one student who took the initiative to set up her blog. I will be promoting this in hopes that students will set up their own. Tomorrow I will meet with some colleagues and we will discuss future planning. I will keep you advised.

I would like the video chat to incorporate a topic that brings out students interest. We will be starting school on Monday and one topic that may be of interest would be the upcoming inauguration (maybe too soon) or as we study the Adams presidency the Alien and Sedition Acts.

I would love to interact with your class via Skype. I have never used it but am a very quick study. Likethe reponder below (Chris) I would be interested in upcoming topics. What about a debate on Hamilton vs. Jefferson? Their two world views could lead to some interesting discussions. We could make this like a socratic seminar as well. I do use the blog and will expand more on that when I get more time.

Ok. This is so exciting! I really want to do this and make it a reality not just some online chat. I love the "fireside chat." I believe skype can be accomplished in LIVE VIDEO feed so that we can actually have both classes see each other with a basic camera for the PC. I also like the idea of taking a sides as an agrarian Jefferson/Democratic Republican or Industrial Hamilton/Federalist view point. We will be getting to this content next week. By the way, would you be using this with regular or advanced students? I visualize this with my GT class but would love to stretch the boundaries of my regular students. I think this would motivate the regular students to reach intellectually more than normal.
Here are some thoughts: We begin with the side of Hamilton as Federalist and prepare statements that defened why a Strong national Government, Fear of mob rule, Loose construction, National bank, Economy based on Manufacturing, and support of lawyers, merchants ect...is better than the democratic Republican platform. We can "chat" or dialogue starting with the first topic...and go until the students get repetitive (like they always do in my debates) Than we will go to topic two: Mob rule...and so on down the list. We can try the technology in advance and just introduce each others class.... send my a copy of your class schedule. We are covering the Jefferson/Hamilton topic this week. I like Susan's ideas. Next week we will be covering the inauguration (Tuesday). I agree with Susan ... lets make this happen. I have to work with our IT people to make sure a port is open so that I can make this work. I will be working on this hopefully today... lots of red tape.

Using Skype I am told should not be a problem. I am on a pretty tight schedule as far as the curriculum. Beyond next Tuesday we cover Adams Administration and the Alien and Sedition Acts.. Since this involves the 1st Amendment and immigration issues this will be an active topic for my students. I am not working Monday MLK day so I can flesh out further details. By the way which college did you attend at UCSC?

The Socratic seminar is a good way to keep students involved. I don't think I will have the time to put this into effect regarding this unit. I teach seven classes on a block schedule with Wednesdays being a short day 30 minutes a class. Next week Tuesday and Weds are also short periods for me. I am thinking maybe Th or Fri to put something together even if it is a trial run. I will be contact.

Go ahead and access the wiki. The students should be completing their work on the Washington-Adams presidencies this week. Each class period has their own so use the navigation side with the class periods. If your students want to do some editing on the Wikis, have them request to join the Wiki and I can approve it. My Honors classes are periods 1,4,8. My regular classes are 3 & 6. Since I have a student teacher he has also created wikis (Mr. Banh). The Lincoln-Douglass Debates would be great. It would give me time to work out any glitches. More than likely we will be there in March.

As far as planning for the Lincoln Douglas debates, would you assign students reading part of the a certain day of the debate. After looking at the reading, my students would probably only be able to handle certain selected passages.

I think a meet and greet would be an good way to work out the kinks since I have yet to use Skype in this setting. I teach a class from 1:10-2:33 which would be a good group to test with. If you have any particular dates give me a heads up. Next Friday the 27th might work.

Perhaps in the lieu of the Lincoln Douglas debate, students could discuss whether slavery in the South was inhumane compared to what child labor was in the North (who benefits from these institutions). I am beginning the unit in two weeks in which we take a comparative look at both the institution of slavery and the labor in the northern factories. Give it some thought.

Our Brainyflix video contest just ended, and I wanted to thank you for helping us get the word out. We got 800 submissions from across the country!

That said, MIT was really happy with the results and will let us run another contest, so we're going for it! But this time, we're gonna have kids create Brainypics flashcards - which are images and sentences paired up with a one of our SAT/ACT words. The contest ends May 22nd, and there'll be iTunes and a cash prize like last time. To boot, we'll double the payout if the kids can hit a certain goal.
