Hi, Amy. I'm dreadfully new at this: you're my first contact. I want to see what I can learn about technology, in particular what else I can learn to help my students who have ASD. I've worked with a lot of kids with ASD, and almost every one of them responds positively to using a computer. There's ton more to find. Incidentally, my daughter has Down Syndrome... I've worshipped some of her teachers over the years. Denise

Thanks for the offer, Amy. :-) If you have any ideas/ resources for elementary teachers that are Web 2.0 - that would be great! I get asked all the time, but my background is with older students.
  • ruthokoye

That would be great! I was a reading specialist for 14 years prior to accepting my current position. I am assigned as the language arts technology resource teacher for my school division for grades K-6.

Hi, Amy. . .sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I've been on a motorcycle tour through Colorado. I teach 5th grade math/science and am hoping to incorporate more technology into my classroom this year. I need to learn about blogging and am hoping to have my students write math/science blogs in addition to other technology ideas that I get.

Thanks for the message about my Z video.
It is part of a larger project, in which teachers across the country were given a letter and asked to create a short movie around that letter, and now we are moving to collaboratively make one larger ABC movie.

For Z, I used Photostory3 and wrote the poem that became the script. Then, I went to Map My Words, and used some key words and did screenshots for images.

More info can be found here: http://techstories.edublogs.org/2007/04/23/the-letter-z

Thanks for the interest and good luck with your own video. You have to just do it and figure it out as you go, I guess. That's the way to learn.

HI, Amy. . .we've been in school for 2 weeks now. I have a nice group of kids this year (though chatty), so I'm looking forward to the schoolyear. The kids are already excited about the science experiments we've already done.

I am on the negotiating team for our teachers, and unfortunately, we are at impasse with contract negotiations, so I will be out of the classroom two days next week for mediation. Had to spend 3 days during summer vacation trying to hammer things out, but to no avail. Things are heating up between teachers and administration, but we are hopeful that we can come to agreement on a fair contract. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

I have put together a pretty neat website (for the first time), but our computer tech can't seem to get it up and running correctly. It can be accessed from inside the school district, but not from home. I think it's on the wrong side of the firewall. Once it is up and running, I'm hoping to start a blog page for the kids. . .so if you have any tips let me know.

Hope that your year is going well. I've forgotten where and what you teach, so could you please remind me?

Enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend!

Hi Amy, Sounds like you've had a good start to the new school year. In Australia we are two thirds the way through our school year with our next break of two weeks in four more weeks - can't you see I'm counting down! After that we have nine weeks till the end of the year. We have our long vacation in December - January for 6 weeks.
I have started my class blog now and the kids are enthusiastic about publishing their writing and having a chance to share it with their families.
I decided to use classblogmeister a it seemed easier to use and had security that was acceptable to my principal as far as privacy etc goes . You can see the main page at:

but the kids pages are password protected.

Hi Amy! I'm just getting back in the swing of things, after dealing with some health issues. I'm working o my Read, Write, Publish project with three fifth grade teachers. One is in Year 2 of the project and the others are juststarting. They will all start using blogs with their kids this month. I actually do my first true lesson on blogs on Monday. I think it will be fun.
  • ruthokoye

You can keep track of the project at my project blog...http://ppsblogs.net/rwp . I actually got the idea for the paper blogging lesson here.

    Hi Amy
Well, I embed in Edublogs through the little "A" button on the text tool bar. If it is a YouTube or GoogleVid, you click that button and it asks for the web address of the video, and then it does all the work for you (love that).
Using TeacherTube is a bit more difficult, in that you need to grab the special edublog code from TeacherTube, and then go into the Code of the post, and put it in that way. I have found, however, that TT videos take a long time to buffer.
Let me know how it goes and if I can provide any further help.
    Peace,
    Kevin

Hey Amy! Saw a comment of yours on someone else's wall. I'm right in your neighborhood, working out of Evanston and living in Skokie. If you ever want to have some coffee and talk tech, let me know!
  • CIndyLane

Amy, My ELITE Teachers would love to correspond with you! May I share your information with them? There are several 3rd grade teachers that would love to share!

I love these types of bookmaking projects: http://www.vickiblackwell.com/makingbooks.html
There's also a web2.0 tool that allows students to create books and publish if they want online: http://beta.tikatok.net/
To practice writing according to text structure, this site is really great: http://www.teachers.ash.org.au/jeather/writingfun/writingfun.html

Hi Amy! I am a tech/staff dev. consultant actually, but taught kindergarten for several years.

    Hi Amy,
Happy to make your acquaintance. Often my picture scares folks off. It was taken near Leland, MI., where I found my first Petosky stone. I tell my students it was taken when I helped Lewis and Clark find a route to the Pacific Ocean.
I know how very blessed I am to have access to so many tools. But along the way, I have learned to make do with very little. I have built a learning network called the Husky Howler Network. You can check it out at http://web.mac.com/g4husky
We have done many projects with classes. Some of the teachers only have access to a computer at home.
Happy to share ideas but perhaps our kids could share a project or two during the school year.
    Best,
    Rick
