I just retired after 33 years of teaching at the Mt. Olive Middle School. There, I taught science for many years before I moved into a computer lab designed to integrate science, math, communications and technology. My courses included Intro to Tech, Synergistics, Robotics, and 21st Century Skills. Over the last few years my students and I have been working with the nonprofit TregoED.org developing a tool that will help kids learn critical thinking strategies while they are learning content. The website TregoED.org has a unique “new and improved” Web 2.0 tool called SCAN. The tool allows teachers to create a session (3 easy steps) to have their class work in-they are given a unique URL to use as a private venue with their class, students do not need to sign up, etc. There are over 100 authentic scenarios in the tool that have to do with current events, history, life skills, etc. OR teachers can create their own. I am excited to share this tool with teachers so that they can help their kids become better thinkers while covering content in an engaging discussion format-sort of like sneaking vegetables into their brownies.
With your work in Communications and Technology, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service.
