My name is Kip Leland and I am the project manager for the Los Angeles Virtual Academy (LAVA) within the Los Angeles Unified School District. I have a doctorate in Educational Technology with an expertise in virtual education. A few years ago I was tasked with planning and developing a virtual high school for LAUSD and thus LAVA was born. Since I was there at LAVA's conception and birth I am sometimes affectionately called 'Mama LAVA'. Inspired by the works of Marc Prensky and Etienne Wenger, I also created a virtual time machine that is used to complement middle and high school social studies. It is still in existence today and used in school districts throughout California. I have had a life-long fascination with how children learn and have dedicated my professional career to insuring that all students have an equal opportunity for success.
