What are some ways teachers are using Google Docs with grades 4-5?  I use it often for students to work on websites on certain topics of research, essays and other odds and ends.  Anything great ideas out there?  :-)

Maria, you are right. It works if groups are made within contacts (what anyone else would call a distribution list). However Google has another Group which is more of a discussion group. If you share with that group name it will not automatically appear in the members docs list.

Roger,

I am pretty sure when you create the group from within the Contact Picker, and use that group to share, it shows up in the students' docs home page. At least, it did yesterday. It works the way you described when you create the group from within the "Contact" tab. Interestingly enough, I can ADD contacts to the group from the group created in the "Contact Picker" from the Contacts tab. You are right, it needs more work on Google's end.

A little more about sharing with a group... When selecting a group to share a google doc it does not place the docement in their docs file. Instead it sends an email with a link only afer they click on the link in the email will it show in their docs list. This really seems strange and causes me some problems in class when our school blocks gmail. The whole area of groups versus distribution lists is not the best feature of google apps.

Thanks, Chris. I tried that, but the groups that I have created under the "Contacts" tab, show up when I click on "Choose From Contacts", but they don't have any students in them. The folder is empty. I think I figured out that I have to create the groups under "Choose From Contacts". Not sure why, but that seems to work.

In response to the question about sharing a Google doc with a group made in contacts: When you choose share it opens a box.  Where it says "Add People" click on "Choose From Contacts." In the new box that opens there is a search field near the top. Right under it there is a pull down menu that will have a list of your contact groups.  You can then select individuals from the group or there is an "All" option to select the whole group at once.

Soon to become an App:

IEP4U.COM has over 4000  Goals and Objectives (IEP-ITP) each with changeable benchmarks. The Idea Statements are spread out over seven subjects (Domains) an... Teachers, parents and students can now access objectives directly from this Web Site. Input key words, phrases, or test names in the search engine to find just the correct objectives for your students needs. Copy and paste any information you want, then modify the objectives (examples) to exactly describe the needs of your students. The kid section will give your students personal input to write their own objectives (with your help) and to play some interesting games as well.

This information is is designed to help you with the daunting task of writing proper IEP's  The data within this web site was written to correlate with the unique characteristics of various formal assessments. Since assessment is essential for the development of the IEP, specific questions were evaluated and idea statements written based upon those questions. Searching the data for idea statements by assessment will enable teachers to plan lessons or web quests based upon how the student scored on the assessment.

Students can pick their own IEP using Pictures!

Our language arts students have been using Google Apps, and our staff is just beginning. We have created some resources to introduce mail, calendar, and blogs. Google Apps is constantly updating so things may not be exactly the same now. Here is the link: Tech Travels Documents  I hope they will be of benefit to some. I look forward to learn from the experts here, because we are still learning.
