Please share your ideas for using online sites, collaborative/project sites like ePals, and other technologies for helping ELL students, both in and out of the classroom.

As one example, teachers go to www.epals.com to find a classroom of English speakers. Two classes can team up as a class, or better yet, individual students can each have a pen pal to write to.

When you are doing the unit on "my home" and students learn the words for various rooms of the house and desk, chair, table, sofa, etc., almost everyone has them write a paragraph about their house. Instead of writing that paragraph to turn in to the teacher, the student can write the paragraph and then send it to the pen pal. The pen pal can write back can comment, ask questions, or write about his own home. This is authentic language practice.

If you have more technology available, your students could record their voices to send to another class, or make a video, etc.

Another recommendation is to have students look at particular movies at home, and to turn on "closed captioning" so that the English words also appear on the screen.
Suggestions on websites to boost reading and writing skills of ELLs!tag:www.classroom20.com,2010-03-05:649749:Topic:4432562010-03-05T04:08:13.084ZCory Dunthttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/CoryDunt

I would like to share this high school and middle school content teachers who are unsure as to how to meet those special needs of ELLs in their classes. I am the high school ELD coach at my site and try to leave no stone unturned as I constantly look for ways to build the confidence of mainstream teachers in trying to meet the needs of ELLs.

Any advice/sites that have worked for you or for colleagues would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Denise

www.ellteacherpros.com

www.teachingsuccesseswithells.blogspot.com
Hi, I am currently conducting a researchtag:www.classroom20.com,2009-12-22:649749:Topic:4226772009-12-22T11:43:09.893ZCory Dunthttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/CoryDunt
Hi, I am currently conducting a research on educator site and I would be so appreciate of you for taking few minutes to complete this online questionnaire. All of your answers are highly valuable, and the data will be analyzed anonymously. Thank you so much in advance.
I am a teacher in elementary school, and because of the following restrictions: 1. There is only one computer that linked to Internet 2. Most of the kids have time limit for using comupter at home
It is not easy to use any web 2.0 tools in an English class. Even though Internet resource can be healful aids, it is still more like a one-way web 1.0 that there is hardly any interaction involved. As a beginner, what can I do?
Thanks in advance for offering any advice

I recommend the video on 21st March for anyone teaching languages.

This site is generally very focused on tech uses. I would also recommend following the author on Twitter.
Best of all, it's free! I've used Gong successfully both in my adult literacy/ESL tutoring and high school ESL practicum classes.

One caveat: Gong does have a moderately complex installation procedure on the server end, but the resulting system is very easy/intuitive for both students and teachers. But I also have a ning for EFL, please join the conversation and lots there about technology. EFL Classroom 2.0 I have a resource site, lots there to keep your classroom very multi media and technologically sound. Especially in the area of games. You'll get lots free and my philosophy is that when it comes to education teachers shouldn't have to pay. Education isn't a budget option but a priority or atleast it should be in our rich society.

Methods to use technology? Please see our EFL Classroom buzka and especially the web 2.0 spot for a full set of links to sound technological applications for ESL . Buzka is a great way to share links and is way beyond delicious in my mind.

Lots of discussions on technology on the site and especially read Susan's and Alicia's blogs (they are teachers in Israel and Argentina with stellar blogs about technology and ESL. Lots of applications such as Andrew Fields fine games at both www.contentgenerator.com and www.classtools.net

My fav. application is www.voicethread.com I have a thread about it on EFL Classroom 2.0 It is amazing and a great way for ESL students to share and create conversation. Check it out!

So much more but please join our conversation and I'll be dropping in here too, to share. I teach EFL teachers in Korea. Mostly methodology but I throw a lot of technology at them - especially the foreign English teachers who need a lot of support.

Thanks for listening and hopefully I can post in reply to these threads soon (must be a computer glitch!).
When I asked an ESL teacher in the local school district (PSD), she told me that another very helpful way to use technology with monolingual students are books on tape and a tool called "Living Books" which is a series of DVD's with different stories and interactive games that have word puzzles, and other sentence structure-learning features. Mrs. Johnson also uses technology to locate a lot of the stories, dramatic activities, and language games that she uses in class. One story was based on learning the importance of diversity and is set up for each student to have a role and act out the story like a play. She also found a word game similar to tic-tac-toe only with words to build a sentence.
