I just attended a conference that really changed the way I define what is a reading skill and what is a reading strategy. My school always used to label inferring, summarizing, etc. as strategies, but after hearing Jennifer Serravallo talk, she called those things skills, with the understanding that the strategy is the tool you use in order to perform a skill. What do you think?

I happened to creat a yahoogroup and moderated communication with the student members that I teach. It's really amazing how students benefit from being on real communication platforms.

So, regularly, I have taken some samples of students' writings and put them on the yahoogroup and leave the students add, edit, adapt and adopt the peices of writing until it looks almost good essays.

From September to June, the number of my students that read BELOW grade level (DRA test) decreased from 16 to 6.
So, have you read any new outstanding children's literature? If so, please SHARE!

I just got the picture book Miss Brooks Loves Books (and I Don't) by Barbara Bottner. It's about how a very creative librarian reaches a very reluctant reader. Love it!

We are beginnig the process of creating updated "Scope & Sequence" and pacing guide documents for our K-5 Reading & Language Arts curriculum. What we have is quite antiquated and we basically need to start from scratch. I'm wondering if anyone has any such document that they'd be willing to share. Also, I really think we need to have some kind of "Mission Statement" to help define some basic premises of what we believe to be effective literacy instruction.

This is really a LANGUAGE ARTS question, but I'm wondering if anyone out there is using the "Write Source" textbook series for writing & grammar? I've got ONE sample copy that I've been using and I love it. I really would like to get a set of them for each of our 3-5 grade classrooms. Let me know your thoughts if you've used this series.

I'm wondering what is the best way to approach this dilemma. There is a student in my after school program who has trouble summarizing stories. Phonologically she is a great reader, but how can I help her retain meaning from the story.
