I like Ning for creating my own classroom network for high school. TodaysMeet.com is a good tool for back channel communication. Gives you some of the effect of Twitter, but on a more private basis. Wallwisher.com is a good environment for elementary students to add their "two cents worth" in a controlled environment.

Edmodo. While I agree NING has great features Edmodo does a better job at streamlining everything to make it easy for the no-so-techy teacher to jump on and learn how to use it right away. Students think it looks just like facebook so their instantly intrigued. I would go with Edmodo
