Does anyone have any book recommendations for pre-teen literature. I have a few girls in my classroom that would really benefit from challenging chapter books that they could connect to (issues of divorce, self-esteem, gossip). I am looking for literature that could possibly bring healing to their lives.

It's tough to build trust in their worlds!

I'm not sure about your students' age, reading level, or maturity level, but here are some suggestions:

  • Everyone I know who has ever read "The Hunger Games" series absolutely LOVES it (pre-teens as well as adults). You might want to check it out first, though -- it's a bit heavy.
  • A similar book that's fairly good is "Matched."
  • A lot of girls also really like the "Uglies" series.

Good luck!
