How rare is the role of Instructional Technology Specialist at the central school district level?

This is a VERY strange question, I know. But I need to try and determine how rare (or common) it is for a school district to have an Instructional Technology Specialist to work at the central level (not school-based)

This is not a director or manager role, rather a teacher who works not in a school but in the district office and assists many schools with integrating and using technology.

If anyone could point me in the direction of some stats, research, data, etc, I would be HUGELY grateful.

We have a district technology director, but he is not instructional really. He does some staff developement, but it is mainly on hardware upgrades he has made. We have a Technology Team that meets about 8 times a year, made up of classroom teachers. They are the closest we get to a technology integrator.

I work at a K12 Tech Integration Specialist - district wide. We do not have any at the building level, just me supporting 7 schools. Some day when we have funds, our vision would be to have one in each building (may be 2 at the largest schools) and one at the district level to help connect the dots.
