Learn how to facilitate global education and inspire student leadership in local and global communities with social digital media tools.

Full Session Description:

Launched in 2000, TakingITGlobal (www.tigweb.org) hosts an online multilingual community of youth from around the world who use social networking to create positive global change. Young leaders logging in to TIG inspire each other to make a difference, learn about issues that matter, and find opportunities to constructively channel their energy and ideas into action. With a growing membership of over 412,000 individuals in every country of the world, the TIG site reached over 5 million people last year alone. TIG’s mission is to empower youth to understand and act on the world’s greatest challenges. This mission is being accomplished through TIG’s online community and through its platform for schools, TakingITGlobal for Educators (TIGed).

TIGed is host to a community of over 7,900 educators in 135 countries who are interested in empowering their students to think and act as world citizens. Visitors to the site will also find a collection of resources that facilitate the inclusion of global perspectives in the classroom, and a virtual classroom and collaboration space designed for international learning partnerships. Members can start their own collaborative projects with other educators they find in the community, or they can engage their students in TIGed-organized programming in three key areas: global citizenship, environmental stewardship, and student voice.

In this session, we will:

Explore the importance of global awareness and citizenship;

Browse the educational tools and resources available through TIG’s online learning community for young global leaders;

Explore how you can benefit from TIGed's community of globally minded teachers, resources, and virtual classroom spaces;

Navigate through the available TIGed programs and initiatives;

Explore how to integrate the study of global issues into the classroom through the use of virtual tools;

Discuss the power of global collaboration and social networking in facilitating student-led learning and engagement;

Build confidence in using online tools in our classrooms to facilitate engaging, interactive, global learning; and

Discuss how to find the support that you need moving forward to take your classroom global.

My name is Dan from Buffalo NY. I am disabled due to a rare spinal condition that has aged my spine 3x my age. I am 45 and it has been estimated that my spine is about 130. Needless to say, I am in a lot of pain and can only sit up for short periods of time.

What I am looking for (with my Mac) is voice to text software that I can use to write stories with. I plan to write short stories, novels and screenplays. I need advice on what to use. I am not computer savvy (I didn't know my mac had text edit until someone showed me). So, I am not real sound with how to do stuff and need pretty basic answers. Is there any free software that can be used? Since I am disabled, I can't work anymore and only get SSD right now (until 65, then my pensions kick in, but that's a long time away).

I refuse to just give up on my dream. Just because my body is breaking down doesn't mean my mind has to. So, this is very important to me. Any software you tell me to use would have to be able to handle standard creative writing needs. Dialog, paragraphs etc. I know screenwriting might just be a template speciality, so, I will have to see if the writing program you have me look into can handle templates, but, one problem at a time. I have a lot of great ideas and with technology so great now, I am hoping that what is in my head might be able to be read or seen (in the case of movies) by others.

thank u all in advance for any help. I know everyone is busy. It is really appreciated.

Don't have apple products so can't evaluate Voice Band. The app is still cheaper than Songsmith ($29.99) vs. $2.99 + .99 for additional instruments (Itune). Read about some problems with app on IPod but Iphone seems to be fine. What I love about both products is that you can sing and it creates music as you sing or hum beats. In Audacity I would have create my own music or edit others. We also play around with Jamstudio, but have not done much with it. This app creates music as one sings a song. Love it. Watch video on Songsmith and Voice Band. Students in my media classes are working on beats and this could transform their beats in great songs for our library fast.
Voice Thread - 4th grade project on Japantag:www.classroom20.com,2010-04-27:649749:Topic:4665182010-04-27T02:54:21.073ZSusan Hoeppnerhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/SusanHoeppner
Hi-
I'm new to the ning and not sure this is the correct spot to solicit response. I am working as technology integration support for a 3-4 classroom in Vermont. The students have created voice threads as a result of researching other countries. The students voted to publish one of the projects in hopes that someone "globally" would respond. If you are from Japan or have experience with Japanese culture/language, please visit our voice thread:…

It seems to me that the key lines of division within grammar instruction (meaning syntax, word choice, usage, punctuation, and even spelling—a catch-all term that most English language-arts teachers use to describe the “stuff” that we “have to , but don’t want to” teach) have been drawn between those who favor part to whole and whole to part instruction. As a brief aside… isn’t this much akin to the graphophonic (phonics-based) and whole language reading debate? Anyway, here is my take on the assumptions of both positions:

Advocates of part to whole instruction believe that front-loading instruction in the discrete parts of language will best enable students to apply these parts to the whole process of writing. Following are the key components of this inductive approach.

1. Memorization of the key terminology and definitions of grammar to provide a common language of instruction.
2. Identification of grammatical constructions leads to application.
3. Familiarity with the rules of grammar leads to correct application.
4. Teaching the components of sentence construction leads to application.
5. Distrust of one’s own oral language as a grammatical filter .

Advocates of whole to part instruction believe that back-loading instruction in the discrete parts of language, as is determined by needs of the writing task, will best enable students to write fluently and meaningfully. Following are the key components of this deductive approach.

1. Minimal memorization of the key terminology and definitions of grammar and minimal practice in identification of grammatical constructions.
2. Connection to one’s oral language is essential to inform fluent and effective writing.
3. Reading and listening to exemplary literature and poetry provides the models that students need to mimic and revise as they develop their own writing style.
4. Minimal error analysis.
5. Teaching writing as a process with a focus on coherence will best enable students to apply the discreet parts such as subjects, predicates, parts of speech, phrases, clauses, sentences, and transitions to say something meaningful.

Of course, how teachers align themselves within the Great Grammar Debateis not necessarily an "either-or" decision. Most teachers apply bits and pieces of each approach to teaching grammar. I take a stab on how to integrate the inductive and deductive approaches in How to Integrate Grammar and Writing Instruction. Does anyone know of any "affordable" options? I love Elluminate but, it is just too expensive (and I don't think they'll sponsor us, like here, either. ) . Also I think, a little confusing for users. I would like something which just needs a click, you enter and then you check your mic and start speaking. Yackpack used to work but I find it is just too confusing but I might look there again.

what kind of options do you think I should consider. Any help/thoughts appreciated.
