I am a graduate student making a career change from telecommunications to educational technology. Wow. The learning curve is a steep climb but I am up for the challenge! :)

I just completed my first multimedia presentation with sound. I used Prezi and then created audio files for each slide using Audacity. It took me almost two weeks to learn how to use Prezi effectively and then also determine which online tools are best for recording and embedding sound into my presentation time.

I learned that creating a script in MS Word prior to making an audio file helps my ideas flow smoother when speaking. However, it takes me about the same time to create the audio file without the script and then make additional edits.

I am still trying to figure out how to add closed captioning. I want to find a free online tool that "listens' to my presentation and then displays the captioning in sync with my voice.

Would you please provide me with some suggestions about how to speed up this process? I am also interested in learning any tips you would like to share regarding multimedia presentations.

Thanks for your help!

There is a current view that there is a gap in a learners knowledge between what they learn at school and what they need in the workplace. For example, they come out of school with an English qualification but are they equipped for using English in the business world? Do they have the ability to write a report, a business letter, hold a conversation with a client and take part in meetings? Do they have the ability to write a report, a business letter, hold a conversation with a client and take part in meetings? To bridge this gap functional skills in the core subjects (English, Maths and I.C.T.) are being gradually introduced into the school curriculum. However, to make this really effective and benefit all learners, shouldn't functional skills be embedded across all subjects and exams modified, to reflect these changes in order to meet the needs of employers?

Literacy is one of the most important skills students can learn in school and affects their ability to understand and communicate nearly any topic they will come across. Digital literacy is becoming increasingly important as more information is being delivered through digital means and often includes audio and video in addition to text. As student-created projects are on the rise, with the popularity of project based learning and student-centered classrooms, it is more important than ever for students to be able to communicate ideas clearly using narrative and multimedia.

I developed a lesson plan for using a really simple animation program called Scratch to teach students about creating story structure, plot, and characters. Students work in groups to create their own interactive animations with a branching storyline that provides viewers with at least 3 different branching points during the story, and at least 2 different options at each branching point.

Specifc learning objectives:

When given an assignment to write a story, students will write plot developments that make sensegiven the characters in the story

Students will create realistic characters that appeal to readers because readers can relate to thechoices made by the characters

Students will write a narrative structure that is logical and leads appropriately to the ending of the story

Short Session Description (one line): A lively and interactive discussion about the importance of relationship in teaching and how to effectively connect to create more teachable time and better academic results.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

I’m a counselor, life coach and professional speaker who specializes in helping teachers and students create mutually beneficial educational relationships. Education is first and foremost about the relationship between the teacher and student. A teacher can be completely proficient with the information and still not connect with the students at the developmental level required for the information to come alive in the classroom.

Students who come from challenging backgrounds often haven’t been taught how to bond with others, trust adults or focus in the classroom so they struggle and can take valuable teachable time away from the rest of the class. I created SchoolToolsTv (STTV) to help teachers and students connect and create the kind of relationships necessary to allow the class to achieve at the highest level possible.

STTV focuses on emotions, manners, bullying and the basic social skills all students need to succeed. STTV creates a conversation in the classroom that fosters a deeper and more meaningful connection between teacher and students. In only 1 minute a day, STTV offers classrooms common sense tools and strategies they can talk about and use to acquire the skills they need to deal with the reality of their situation in the classroom and beyond.

When all students realize it’s more about them than it is about their tests score, a safer and more positive learning environment is created in the classroom and everyone benefits. When the show is used school wide, the entire culture becomes one of relationship and connection which makes the school safer and more conducive to other types of educational reforms. In school, as it is in life, “It’s all about relationships”. I have a Master’s in counseling with a Pupil Personnel Services Credential and have done over 3,000 presentations in the K-12 environment over the past 8 years.

Hi, Does anyone out there have or know of any checklists that they would be willing to share for essential Teacher IT (ICT) skills?

I'm thinking things like:
"Can you insert an image into a Word document?"
"Can you add and edit events in Outlook Calendar?"
etc

I'm planning to make up quite a wide ranging checklist of skills for the Office Suite, Moodle and Promethean software essential for your average secondary teacher at our school, plus other bits and pieces.

Thanks in advance!

I am meeting with a small team of teachers at my school this week to discuss the 'creation' of technology standards for the school. My idea is to develop a set of skills/standards for the school so that we can strategically plan a technology curriculum to be implemented across the school. Currently, the school has a computer teacher that sees the students 30 minutes a week and there is really no classroom technology integration happening. The school has SMART boards and a computer lab. What I want to get the teachers to think about is that technology can be a part of their classroom as well. The goal for this year is to create those standards/skills that the students will develop during their time at the school and for teachers to plan to implement some or all of these standards starting next year while they are planning their curriculum.

Any ideas on what I can share with them? I already have a few documents with examples of standards other schools have created and I was thinking of showing them some videos and sharing some information on the importance of technology literacy.

21 Foundation Documentary and Resourcestag:www.classroom20.com,2010-03-19:649749:Topic:4515152010-03-19T19:33:31.600ZNathan Ketsdeverhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/NathanKetsdever
