I am a graduate student making a career change from telecommunications to educational technology. Wow. The learning curve is a steep climb but I am up for the challenge! :)

I just completed my first multimedia presentation with sound. I used Prezi and then created audio files for each slide using Audacity. It took me almost two weeks to learn how to use Prezi effectively and then also determine which online tools are best for recording and embedding sound into my presentation time.

I learned that creating a script in MS Word prior to making an audio file helps my ideas flow smoother when speaking. However, it takes me about the same time to create the audio file without the script and then make additional edits.

I am still trying to figure out how to add closed captioning. I want to find a free online tool that "listens' to my presentation and then displays the captioning in sync with my voice.

Would you please provide me with some suggestions about how to speed up this process? I am also interested in learning any tips you would like to share regarding multimedia presentations.

Thanks for your help!

I am currently in college for teaching and have been thinking about how I am going to choose the type of school when I get a job. I used to think there was only public or private schools to choose from. Now, however I realize that there are many different choices to make under those categories. Under the public school category there are five different choices: Traditional, Full-service traditional schools, Magnet, Charter, and Alternative. Then choosing from the private schools there are four more choices: Religious, Nonreligious, Single gender, and For-profit. So knowing all of this information, my question for you all is what tips do you have for choosing where to work?
I little idea that's been brewing in my head:

Integrating coffee/snack breaks into the classroom:

When learning gets a bit too much, students are showing signs of fatigue, distraction and you generally know it's time for a break! But at the same time, you don't want to cut into your lesson time, especially if you're on a roll or really getting into some meaty discussions.

All colleges seem to operate a no eating/drinking in the classroom policy. But what if you could offer the break the students are craving without having to leave the classroom. Students whip out a naughty choccy bar or fizzy drink (or heaven forbid - the college may even provide some sort of something).

Students may carry on a discussion, or tangent into a new thread within the subject, that may not have happened if they left for 10 minutes, lost their train of thought and come back again.

Also, unlikely student bonds may occure which could enhance the classroom dynamic even more!!

What are people's thoughts???

Our team has been exploring many alternative devices to be used in the classroom. Besides the iPad, we have also investigated the Google Chromebook. The ultra light laptop is Google's answer to the traditional laptop, but is it right for education? Check out our Pros and Cons list at: chromebooknation.blogspot.com
Do you use a specific lesson plan website or set of websites when planning lessons? Do they have a specific format? I've seen many sites with carefully crafted lesson plans, but I wonder, do teachers really use them? If so, how? How much do you tweak it? Do new teachers need "standard" lesson plans, and then, once they're experienced, do they use them or just "wing it?" Do you like to use specific formats from sites like the International Reading Association, Scholastic, Teachers' Network, etc. There seems to be a debate about it in the college of education and information/library studies, so I wanted to ask the experts in Classroom2.0.
Personally, I think that while Ipads have educational purposes it needs to be assessed what purpose they will be serving in the classroom and if a current technology device could achieve the same goal. Since they are a new fad, the cost may be greater for Ipads which may be an unnecessary increase in technology expenses. I feel that it is necessary to bring in 'new technology' when it is not brought in because it is a new fad but when it is required and its services are necessary in order for a student to achieve his or her highest potential.
