I am hoping to collaborate with other instructors that teach Video Production to see what hardware and software people are using at the secondary level and how they manage their labs.

We are currently deploying new computers to 40+ elementary schools. Our present model of allocation goes beyond strict student ratio, to provide a stable, consistent lab environment for schools, on a 3-year replacement cycle. Most schools are more than happy to have their labs updated, but I am noticing increasing push-back for classroom mini-labs (network drops are the schools' cost). I am a former computer, English and math teacher, with a lab, and a classroom mini-lab, and frankly, I had trouble maintaining robust class-use of the 4 networked computers I had.
Most classroom computers seem to be places to put over-due marking and dust. My question is, are you seeing a new trend to a change of classroom practice that allows seamless integration of technology, with a motivated teacher, or do you think these mini-labs, installed at the expense of an up-to-date computer lab, will simply be a place for extra time on games and the like.
We are seriously considering installing software for teaching Spanish and French on our computer lab computers next year. However, there are some questions about the effectiveness of using this as one of the modalities we use to teach language. With the understanding that it would only be one avenue of many, do any of you use software to teach language skills? If so, do you recommend it?

I have a classroom of 24 student computers, and I will be installing GenevaLogic's Vision Software, so that I can direct instruction and monitor the students. Unfortunately, my district's technical people have put it back on me to prove that the software will work, but not screw up the network for the whole school.
I'm out here on this limb all alone, and I know that the techs are just waiting for this project to fail, so that they can prevent any other new software from being installed on student computers. This is my first year teaching in our K-8 school. Our lab is currently arranged in 4 pods of 6 computers/pod + 2 extra computers along a wall. I have been told in the next two years we are going to rearrange the room since having the pods allows for students to use other programs than what we are working on (can only see 3-4 monitors at a time. My questions are: how are your labs arranged? What do you like/not like about this? What would your dream lab be?
Thanks for the help!

I am the technology coordinator for a small (250 student) 4 - 8 school located in a high poverty urban district. We are trying to outfit our school with computers and looking at using NComputing cards to decrease the cost of putting multiple PCs in each classroom. NComputing puts a network card into a desktop box that you can then connect to 3 other monitors, mice, and keyboards. In effect, you get 4 terminals that share the resources of one computer. Supposedly it works fine as long as you aren't using graphically intensive programs. Using this solution we are looking at putting 4 terminals into each of our 10 classrooms for about $15,000 - $17,000. Has anyone used this product? How satisfied were you with it?
We are also looking at purchasing a laptop cart. I know Apple has a solution but I haven't researched many others. Can anyone share experience with purchasing and using a laptop cart? Hello. I am not sure if there is a discussion out there for computer lab teachers yet. If not, I would like to start one so we can bounce ideas and resources off each other. I spent my first year teaching as a computer lab teacher. At first I was hesitant because I thought I would be a classroom teacher. Now, I love it and feel I am in the right place at the right time.
