Presentation Language: English

Target Audience(s): K-12 educators, community educators, university staff and faculty
Short Session Description (one line): Four panelists share their thoughts and experiences with badging for learning, makerspaces for inquiry learning, game design, and e-textile projects.

Full Session Description :
Today’s students and teachers want robust and multidimensional learning experiences in their K-12 classrooms. Makerspaces, hackerspaces, and libraries are emerging as key out-of-school hubs for out-of-school learning. In some cities, these entities work in parallel but not in partnership.

In Ann Arbor, Michigan, however, K-12 educators, graduate students, entrepreneurs, academics, and university staff members are in the early days of pooling our expertise. Game designers learn tips from K-12 educators, and professors learn from makerspace enthusiasts. We’re excited about the potential for bringing together different perspectives, networks, skill sets, and knowledge so that great learning happens throughout our community.

Join us for a panel discussion in which we explore our experiences with makerspaces for inquiry learning, badging, e-textiles, and open educational resources … and the power of sharing what we know.

Websites / URLs Associated with Your Session: Will share in presentation

Hands-On, Minds-On Learningtag:www.classroom20.com,2012-03-09:649749:Topic:8147242012-03-09T12:08:48.795ZBrian C.
Each summer for the past few years I've attended Constructing Modern Knowledge (CMK). This absolutely unique learning experience provided me with experiences that have shifted how I teach children and adults. Last year I joined the faculty of this amazing event and found myself learning as much as the participants.

Are you tiring of the "sit & get" conference sessions? Wish you were actually doing, creating and collaborating rather than just listening or talking about it? If so, CMK is for you. You don't need to be a "maker", programmer, scientist, or mathematician. I've helped english, social studies and kindergarten teachers develop projects that push their thinking and understanding about what learning is and can be for themselves. Ultimately, as educators we always translate this back to the learning for children in our care.

Constructing Modern Knowledge is back for a fifth consecutive year, July 9-12, 2012 in Manchester, NH. This year’s CMK 2011 promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

A new group has been started to discuss the best ways to implement inquiry based learning. We know that this type of authentic learning is the best for our students, but the reality of our teaching world can be quite different. The goal of the group is to exchange ideas so we can find practical ways of implementing learning based on inquiry. We would love to have you come by and give a few ideas and take a few ideas. Hope to see you there!…
