Hi folks.
I am a long time user of computers and I think we are on the cusp of major changes to schools and teaching in the next five to ten years.
However, at the moment, I am trying to get my head around this concept of interactivity.
I have just read an article called "50 Ways to Use Wikis for a More Collaborative and Interactive Classroom" which is a good article but made me think about the concept of 'interactive' when it comes software in the classroom.

What makes some software (like wikis) more interactive than others (like Word)?
Why is it important that the software we use is interactive?
What are the measurable educational benefits of trying to get our classrooms to become more interactive?

I know for some this might be obvious, but I want to go to the core of what this concept means and I need your help basically because I have come to the conclusion that most software applications (and even hardware) are not interactive. Does this really matter?

I'll add to the discussion later, but if others have thoughts, I would be happy to hear them.
Projectors and Laptopstag:www.classroom20.com,2009-09-15:649749:Topic:3826712009-09-15T22:30:00.137ZVanessa Rileyhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/VanessaRiley
The projector I have is a few years old. I'm thinking maybe 2006 or older. We just got new laptops and they don't seem to be very compatible. I've been told that the laptops are widescreened, but I don't really see a difference between it and the old one.
When my computer is projecting, it changes my screen resolution so that it is blurry and big and gives me a headache, but looks great on the wall. When I change it to 1280X1024 so that I can see on my machine, it gives me a widescreen image…

Has anyone else had this problem?
Is there a fix?
I know this is an IT question, but after hearing their initial condescending response to a colleague, I'd rather present a solution when they tell me that it can't be done. The past few months, there's been a lot of buzz about netbooks and similar technologies that may hopefully make portable hardware more attainable for schools. I’ve been giving serious thought to the implementation of netbooks and similar technology in schools as a way to make 1-1 initiatives more affordable and sustainable in various settings.
Anyone here using netbooks or similar hardware - Classmates, XOs, Neos, etc.?
Any 1-1 programs using them or considering moving from traditional laptops to netbooks? Trying to put together information for grant proposaltag:www.classroom20.com,2008-09-13:649749:Topic:1888102008-09-13T06:36:45.573ZVicky Shttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/VickyS
I have been asked to put together what it would cost to replace the computers in our lab. We are a small Episcopal school and we currently have 22 9-10 year old XP machines in they lab. They have small hard drives (9.5 GB in most cases) and minimal memory 256-512MB and huge clunky monitors. We have various and assorted old inkjet printers in the lab - a few are all in one units with scanners.

I know I want something bigger with more memory and more hard drive. I can't even install everything I want on the machines the way they are now and there are many things we can't run because of memory issues.

I do want to stay with PCs because we many not be able to replace everything at once. I'm not sure if I want to go with Vista or buy something with the XP downgrade.

If you were putting this together what is the minimum configuration you'd want as far as memory, hard drive, monitor size, etc? Which brand would you recommend? Any you would avoid? Any processors you would avoid? Would you go with Vista or stay with XP?

Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.
