Trust, privacy, and safety are critical to learning in an open online world. How can learners exercise control over who sees and uses their data? What tools do they need to navigate, collaborate, and learn online with confidence? What solutions will foster greater civility and respect in online learning environments? How can open technical standards create more opportunities to share and collaborate online in a spirit of trust?

The fifth open, international HASTAC/MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Competition, the Trust Challenge, will award $1.2 million to institutions and organizations that tackle these questions in real-life learning contexts. The Trust Challenge will fund successful collaborations or “laboratories” that create scalable, innovative, and transformative exemplars of connected learning that bridge technological solutions with complex social considerations of trust.

Awards: $10,000 to $150,000 year-long development grants; $1.2 million will be awarded in total.

Classroom Earth is supporting middle and high school teachers around the country who are eager to make wildlife conservation part of their curriculum. Classroom Earth's 2012 Professional Development Grants will enable applicants to take one six-week online course offered by the Wildlife Conservation Society to create a strong foundation in wildlife conservation. Participating teachers will be better equipped to bring wildlife conservation into the classroom, facilitate scientific learning and to connect students with their natural surroundings. This Classroom Earth grant opportunity will also support teachers to earn graduate level credit.

Classroom Earth received very positive feedback about last year’s courses. According to one teacher, “I really enjoyed my course, Conservation Biology for Educators. I found everything relevant to what I teach, and can use it in many different classes.”

BUT! He is a marketer. He set up a booth at the NJ State Fair, demonstrating his students efforts and projects. As a direct result, he has signed on 10 corporate sponsors for his program, and made many more business contacts.
J+J was revamping one of their mechanics workspaces, they called him. He was able to obtain a complete set of heavy tools and work benches for the lab. Snap-on tool sets, not bad!

One company was purchasing new computer workstations for their staff, guess who got 20 lightly used workstations?

I am working on a resource for teachers of Grants and Funding Sources that teachers can use to assist them in purchasing iPods and other technology for the classroom. What web sites are you using to find funds that might be available? Thanks for your help.
