You really are trying to prepare "21st century lessons" for your students.

You also know: 1) Students become better readers and writers when they practice authentically, not just filling in a worksheet or doing multiple guess exercises.

2) Preparing students for success in global society means connecting with others outside your school, state or country. That’s why I invite you to add your voice to a new movement:

“Pledge to Take Your School Global.”

The mission is simple: We’re asking teachers, parents and students worldwide to pledge to take just one action this year to connect with learners in another part of the world. When students share and collaborate across the globe, they explore their curiosity about our planet’s diversity, get excited to use technology and cultivate invaluable 21st century communication skills as they go. They think beyond what the textbook tells them and wonder about others, where and how they live.

Teachers who belong to the ePals Global Community, a social learning network that connects classrooms around the world, have seen first hand how global collaboration improves student learning. 70% of Global Community students write more often, 75% write better. More than half of Global Community classrooms report a stronger grasp of the “real world” purpose of class lessons.

It’s a single step. Start with a pledge.

Submit your pledge here.

Committed to authentic learning? Share your commitment by “Liking” the pledge on Facebook and encouraging friends, parents and colleagues to follow your lead.

Here's an example of a high school teacher in Virginia who uses the ePals Global Community:

As a computer resource specialist and ePals coordinator, I use ePals to inspire teachers to use technology in engaging ways to help their students develop higher level thinking skills. With ePals from around the globe, we complete long-term, short-term, and one-time exchange projects. Our students exchange email letters, snail mail packages, postcards, handcrafted greeting cards, electronic cards, and so much more.

If you want to see how you can use a social media tool as an extension of the classroom then go to www.meetatrecess.com and create your classroom there for the coming school year. The network is called Recess and it is FREE!

Once you have signed up you can create your classroom and invite students to join you within it. Use the calendar to schedule class and school events, post homework and provide other information to your students. Put video, pictures, documents and learning resources right in your virtual room. You have a pin board that is just like the wall in Facebook. You have personal profile pages where you and your students can share information about themselves. Use the internal chat and email in a safe environment.

Recess is a tool that can be used by young and old. It is intuitive. You can customize the look and feel of your pages and you can use the online resources that are provided free of charge.

Recess is a product of Enable Inc., a Toronto, Ontario, Canada, company that has been building proprietary web applications for over 10 years. Recess is free because its sister products aimed at corporations, government and NGOs are not. Those products generate the income that allows Enable to offer Recess to educators at no charge.

Recess has been used in the Toronto District School Board, Canada's largest, for a number of years. It was started to help encourage at-risk youth in a middle school to stay in school. It made an immediate impact on that school and resulted in its wider usage across many schools in Toronto.Schools in Florida, Ohio and other U.S. states have been using Recess. Why not you at your school?

Recess is different from Blackboard. It is truly a social network application that has a feel similar to Facebook but is built around virtual classrooms to give it a focus and purpose. That's what makes it such a great learning environment to add to your bricks and mortar classroom learning environment.

To learn more you can go to www.meetatrecess.com, or write me back at len@meetatrecess.com.

Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to motivate your students in a medium in which they are already deeply engaged.

With budget slashing across the country, a lot of schools are struggling to find the tools they need to create a 21st century school.

But, in fact, your school can have 1:1 computing, ongoing tech training, a tech help desk, interactive whiteboards, an online school social network, student e-mail, classroom websites, and tech classes for as low as $55 per classroom.
