Free, meaning no cost, and open, referring to the use of legal tools (open licenses) that give everyone permission to reuse, modify, and share educational resources. Free and open sharing increases access to education and knowledge for anyone, anywhere, anytime.<br/><br/>According to Mary Lou Forward, Executive Director for the OpenCourseWare Consortium, “Open education has opened amazing new learning opportunities for learners of all ages around the world. We are constantly gratified by the variety of impacts these resources are having on people’s lives.” Here is a sampling of stories of those who have benefited from open education:<br/><br/></p>
<ul>
<li> K-12 schools in Utah undertook a pilot program to use printed open textbooks in their schools, cutting textbook costs by over 50%, allowing teachers to tailor the curriculum, and permitting students to interact more deeply with the content. The program has now been expanded statewide.</li>
<li>Teachers in New York are using open resources provided by the state to address the Common Core State Standards.</li>
<li>A California teacher of the year prepared for subject matter certification using open resources, crediting them for his success on the CSET exams</li>
<li>Founders of a Haitian solar energy company used open courseware to develop increased knowledge in solar engineering that allowed them to build their business serving needs of low income and rural people</li>
<li>A student in MIT Media’s Lab’s Creative Learning MOOC, Cecilia Trevino, a participant from Italy asked her 12 year old daughter for help using technology related to the course, showing that learning communities were forming between participants of the course, and also between participants and their local communities and families.</li>
<li>Ankit Kandelwhal, an engineer in India, was looking to develop his management skills and international perspectives to advance his career. Open courses have given him the access to high-quality educational content from a variety of institutions around the world, leading to a self-designed study plan that will help him meet his goals.</li>
</ul>
<p><br/>Open Education Week (March 10-14, 2014) is a global event that seeks to raise awareness of free and open sharing in education and the benefits they bring to teachers and learners. Coordinated by the OpenCourseWare Consortium, the event showcases projects, resources, and ideas from around the world that demonstrate the work already underway in open education. The open education movement seeks to reduce barriers, increase access and drive improvements in education through open sharing and digital formats. Open education includes free and open access to platforms, tools and resources in education, including learning materials, course materials, videos, assessment tools, research, study groups, and textbooks, all available under an open license. <br/><br/>Website: <a href="http://www.openeducationweek.org/">http://www.openeducationweek.org/</a><br/><br/>Regards,<br/><br/>Karen Fasimpaur<br/><br/><br/></p> Looking for content writertag:www.classroom20.com,2014-01-24:649749:Topic:9910072014-01-24T19:53:26.475ZJOSEPH ABRAHAMhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/JOSEPHABRAHAM

<p>Creative, inventive, experiencing art and art collections together with the ideas to personally fabricate, remix and make something tangible with room for creativity, reinvention, and collaboration..... Sounds like 21st century skills abound.</p>

<p>Hello everyone,</p>

<p> </p>
<p> What I am looking for (with my Mac) is voice to text software that I can use to write stories with. I plan to write short stories, novels and screenplays. I need advice on what to use. I am not computer savvy (I didn't know my mac had text edit until someone showed me). So, I am not real sound with how to do stuff and need pretty basic answers. Is there any free software that can be used? Since I am disabled, I can't work anymore and only get SSD right now (until 65, then my pensions kick in, but that's a long time away). </p>
<p> I refuse to just give up on my dream. Just because my body is breaking down doesn't mean my mind has to. So, this is very important to me. Any software you tell me to use would have to be able to handle standard creative writing needs. Dialog, paragraphs etc. I know screenwriting might just be a template speciality, so, I will have to see if the writing program you have me look into can handle templates, but, one problem at a time. I have a lot of great ideas and with technology so great now, I am hoping that what is in my head might be able to be read or seen (in the case of movies) by others. </p>
<p>thank u all in advance for any help. I know everyone is busy. It is really appreciated.</p>

<p class="MsoListParagraph" style="text-indent: -0.25in;">It is It is ronic that the act of passing on prior inventions and discoveries, or acquired knowledge, seems to diminish the inclination to think creatively. Clearly, the mind is empowered by<br/></p>

transmitted. In point of fact, there appears to be a host of subtle but<br/>
pervasive factors woven through the fabric of traditional schooling that tend<br/>
actually to discourage the type of critical analysis--the thoughtful<br/>
articulation and decomposition of a problem--that leads to constructive<br/>
thinking. I take constructive thinking to be the composition and assembly of<br/>
possible solutions, including some that may need to be invented. Constructive<br/>
thinking, then, includes both "critical" and "creative"<br/>
intellectual processes. <br/></span></p>

The Creative Arts department consists of Foods, Textiles, Visual Arts, Drama, Orchestra, and Choir. Our school uses tablets with OneNote, and we use Moodle; however, I'd love to hear about any other ideas too. What I've come up with so far is using OneNote in Foods to create and share recipe cards, recording and / or podcasting student progress in the Orchestra and Choir, and using OneNote to analyse artwork in the Visual Arts class. The textiles teacher wants to have the students create fashion portfolios and to come up with fashion design ideas, so I've suggested using OneNote for that. The Visual Arts teacher is using Diigo as a replacement for an information gathering assignment that used to involve cue cards. In my assigned role as devil's advocate, I'd like to see the reasons why a teacher would want to have students write a blog to illustrate what they have learned on a topic (large or small) vs writing the traditional paper with sources cited, artwork on the cover, and eraser marks as needed. What would be the advantages of assigning a blog be created? What would be the pitfalls? What would be the advantages of assigning a blog be created? What would be the pitfalls? What would be necessary in order for all participants to be able to post a blog equally with their peers (if, for example they don't have a computer at home!)? Then, when you have considered the advantages, the superintendent tells you they won't let you do it unless you can supply research information that these advantages exist and are beneficial to students! I'm new to ning and want to start using it in my college creative writing classes. I've been searching on here but haven't found much info about teaching creative writing. Here's what I want to do and I'm looking for ideas/suggestions on how to best set up my ning site. I teach three classes and want them to have their "group" in ning. I only want students from the same class to be able to view each other's work and critique it. I want discussions and comments to all stay inside their own group/class. The main thing we do is peer review. I want a way for the students to post their pieces and have their peers comment. I want the comments to go with the pieces, not all over the place like on the comment wall and then there's no way to tell which comment goes with which student's work. I'm also looking for the best ways to utilize the ning features. For instance, how are you using the notes feature in your class? Or any of the other features? I'm really struggling with just setting up my ning and getting everything in place for fall semester. Can anyone help?
