American Flag Painting

Use small craft pom-poms to dab red, white and blue paint onto paper. Using clothespins to hold the poms, dab each color paint in the shape of a flag.

Make American Monuments

Place pictures of the American monuments near the blocks. Show the kids how to make the different monuments with different colors and shapes of blocks and other available materials.

USA Bracelet

Make a USA or America bracelet by stringing pony beads and letter beads on a pipe cleaner or heavy string. You can add other decorative beads as well.

Firework Hands

Cut hand prints out of construction paper and glue on to a background paper. You can also put paint on the child’s hands and make hand prints on the paper. Use glue to draw lines that represent the spray of fireworks and sprinkle on some glitter.

Book of Patriotic Symbols

Create a small book out of paper and glue pictures of patriotic symbols on each page. You can also draw the symbols. Have the children color the pictures and write the words that represent each symbol. You can create a story with the symbols or put various symbols together along a time line.

Patriotic Word Building

Use small magnetic letters that have been grouped together in words. Scramble the letters and let the kids put the words back together. Words can be repeatedly jumbled and remade giving each child an opportunity to play the game on their own.

We want to help you and your students celebrate Earth Day in ways that are not only engaging and enlightening, but also thematic and clearly-focused.

Our guide offers two student-friendly activities that will:

Help students visualize and understand how oil spills impact our planet

Give students the opportunity to use two methods currently used to clean up oil spills

In addition to these two activities, we refer teachers to one of our favorite resources, If It Were My Home. Using this website, students will be able to visualize the impact of the 2010 oil spill by seeing it physically overlaid onto a customizable map.

The last two sections are devoted to our favorite resources: five documentaries and five books that all relate to oil and our environment.

We hope that you and your students enjoy these activities.

Happy Earth Day!

What are you doing technology-wise for Earth Day with your classes? Got any great ideas? Post 'em here!

My class and I have explored several eco-links and we are going to explore where we live via Google Earth, but I'd love to hear more ideas about meaningful Earth Day tech-related activities.

I feel Earth Day is so important and am curious to hear about what teachers are doing out there. Please share! Thanks!
