Whether from a commercial entity or not, the cutting and pasting of an identical message to more than one member or group represents a form of spamming. While there might be legitimate reasons to do this, it's usually an attempt to take advantage of the time and attention of other members. Spamming diminishes the value that members find in a community like ours, since it can mean that they have to weed through unwanted solicitations or information in order to participate in the good discussions available here.

As well, the posting of discussion topics or replies that do not relate to educational technology or the use of Web 2.0 in education are also a form of spamming. Whether or not they are important topics in their own right, they potentially detract from the value of the Classroom 2.0 to its members. It is a little harder to draw hard and fast lines here because we are a community, but if you are in doubt as to the appropriateness of posting a topic, please either email me or post it as a blog post instead of a forum discussion.

In a Ning network, to remove a member you have to "ban" them, which remove all of their content. Unfortunately, there is no way to temporarily "disable" a member pending resolution of a problem. For this reason, I will generally try to make contact with an individual before removing him or her from the community, but when clear violations are taking place I will immediately ban a member.

If you are the recipient of messages that were unsolicited or that you feel are spam, please alert my by sending me an email with the URL/link to the member who sent you the message.
Having to flee her home during the night with little notice, Barbara is staying with a friend, but I'm told she now has only has the clothes on her back and the few items she could throw into her car.

Barbara has asked for prayers and thoughts as she and her family make all the adjustments that they need to. Clarence Fisher and Jen Wagner have set up a donation fund for Barbara at http://www.jenuinetech.com/bbfund.htm to collect money to help her make it through the holidays. There are also instructions for sending cards, gift cards, or even other donations (Jen has clothes sizes).

Barbara has a special place in my heart, being the one and only attendee at the first EduBloggerCon, held at Shakey's Pizza in Palm Springs in March of 2007 during the CUE conference. Without Babara showing up, the idea of EduBloggerCon might have died on the spot! :)

I hope, if you are able, that you will consider making a donation to Barbara at this time. Thank you. Classroom 2.0 LIVE Web Eventstag:www.classroom20.com,2008-11-16:649749:Topic:2158962008-11-16T06:36:45.471ZSteve Hargadonhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/SteveHargadon
This Thursday (November 20th) at 5pm Pacific, Maggie Tsai from Diigo and special guest Jennifer Dorman will be hosting a Classroom 2.0 LIVE session to introduce the first phase of "Diigo Educator Account", a suite of features that makes it easy for teachers to get their entire class of students or their peers started on collaborative research using Diigo's web annotation and social bookmarking technology.

We'll continue to try and have these king of events more regularly, so I've added the events module to CR 2.0, and future events will be listed on the left side of the front page of the network. I'll also send out an email before each event. The event listing gives the URL for the Elluminate event room and a link to test your system for compatibility with Elluminate. You don't need to join/RSVP to the event in CR 2.0 in order to attend, but if you do so, you'll receive any special notices specifically related to the event.

Once the events are over, you can click on the following link to see all events, and I'll include links to both the Elluminate recordings and audio-only versions (which I've done for the Wikispaces event).

http://www.classroom20.com/events/event/search?q=%22CR+2.0+LIVE%22

Feel free to start separate forum discussions if you want to have conversations on these or any upcoming sessions, as the commenting on the actual event listings is limited. Susan Tsairi started a Classroom 2.0 group in Diigo some months ago, and I'm wanting to give it some promotion here! If you are using Diigo (www.diigo.com) for social bookmarking, and you join the Classroom 2.0 group (http://groups.diigo.com/groups/classroom20), you can "send" bookmarks that related to Web 2.0/collaboration in education to the group.
From my standpoint, this would be a great way to be clued into new sites, and I can use the group for the now-weekly Classroom 2.0 "Web 2.0 in Education" show on Saturday mornings (see http://www.classroom20wiki.com/LIVE+Conversations).

By the way, you can also "tweet" your bookmarks directly from Diigo. Pretty cool, too. Happy Birthday Classroom 2.0...tag:www.classroom20.com,2008-03-25:649749:Topic:1221442008-03-25T17:32:34.625ZSteve Hargadonhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/SteveHargadon
Last night we celebrated the first birthday of Classroom 2.0 by having a little "working" celebration online where we: got new set of volunteers to be CR 2.0 "greeters," determined we would start an open advisory panel call once a month, and brainstormed some fun ideas for using Elluminate to allow for more specific real-time discussions.

After that my wife and I took our kids bowling to celebrate... :)
I was pretty busy this last month organizing our first live CR 2.0 workshop in San Francisco, but I have had a couple of days this week to finally pull together something I've wanted to do for a while: regular audio (and soon video) virtual "meet-ups" for Classroom 2.0 members.

The schedule for these talk-casts is on our wiki at http://www.classroom20wiki.com/LIVE+Conversations. I've scheduled sessions starting today (!), and you are also welcome to add and facilitate any events you would like that pertain to Classroom 2.0. Once we have a good grasp of the different audio/video/whiteboard/desktop-sharing programs available, we could even do some training sessions for those who want to moderate. (Elluminate has generously agreed to provide access to their web meeting software for these meetings, but until that's in place I've set up to use Talkshoe.com for our first sessions. I've also put in some notes on the best way to use Talkshoe, which you can see by clicking on the link in the "medium" column.)

Today's session will be just an introduction and for fun, especially since it's Valentine's Day here in the U.S. and we might get limited participation from the more romantic crowd! :) Friday's session will be on "Creative Commons, Open Content, and Copyright" in education. Then I've listed some others for next week that would start us on a series of discussions about different Web 2.0 programs in education. My thought is to create enough variety in topics that most of our members will find something they want to be a part of--or listen to later (we'll record the sessions so they are available afterwards). I've also scheduled one for next week that should accommodate non-North-American time zones--and could use some feedback on doing that regularly, or even having a separate organizing facilitator.

I'm particularly interested in encouraging folks who might want to start and facilitate their own series of Talk-casts--say, ""Web 2.0 in the History Classroom," or the like. If you think that might be you, email me separately or comment here and we can organize that on the wiki.

Thanks for being a part of Classroom 2.0! I'll look forward to talking to those who join the calls. Influx of SameShow "Informercials" on CR 2.0tag:www.classroom20.com,2007-10-18:649749:Topic:615532007-10-18T14:09:08.998ZSteve Hargadonhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/SteveHargadon

I feel that these posts cross the line into pure promotion. One sign for me is the lack of any contribution to other forum threads by the posters.

I don't want to make it impossible for commercial providers of solutions to participate in the network, as I feel they can both contribute and receive good feedback from the members here. But I also have to make sure that the network doesn't become less valuable to members who end up having to sort through "ads" to get to content.

I would like to invite your comments on this matter. I will not remove the three posts above so that we have a chance to discuss this. If, however, any more get posted, I will start removing both the posts and the posters. I'm making independent contact with the posters to encourage a better understanding of the site and our need to address this. When Classroom 2.0 started, there was a big question about whether social networking would even be an appropriate tool for an educational network. I believe that was quickly answered, and for many of us, CR 2.0 became a place of some amazing and engaging dialog.
The original purpose of the site was to provide an easy, user-friendly entry-point into using Web 2.0 for those who didn't have much (or any) experience with the collaborative web. I still think the site does that, but now that it's…
The original purpose of the site was to provide an easy, user-friendly entry-point into using Web 2.0 for those who didn't have much (or any) experience with the collaborative web. I still think the site does that, but now that it's grown to almost 3400 members, I get the feeling that some of the sense of being a "community" that originally developed is harder to experience. And maybe that's OK, as lots of you have taken Ning and built your own communities that are more specific to your particular needs.

But I'd also like to tap into some of the "old guard" and find out if there are things you think I could be doing to improve/grow/facilitate what takes place here. When you take the time to participate, you make a huge difference and are appreciated.

(I also have to say that I really think it's time for some kind of a Classroom 2.0 get-together, virtual or physical. I'll be announcing EduBloggerCon 2008 soon, to take place in association with NECC, and this year we're also going to have EduBlogerCon West in March as part of the CUE.org show in Palm Springs. I'm hoping a lot of our CR 2.0 friends will come. But I keep wondering if there is enough critical mass to do a Web 2.0 in Education conference by itself... It wouldn't have to be huge, but I think it would be an amazing event.)

So, old and new guard, where do we go from here? Colorado State University Influx!tag:www.classroom20.com,2007-09-12:649749:Topic:487912007-09-12T21:26:24.095ZSteve Hargadonhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/SteveHargadon
OK, I'm loving the influx of questions from the Colorado State University contingent. It's great to have you here on Classroom 2.0.

Some of the questions you are asking have never been asked before on Classroom 2.0, and I'm thinking you are going to stretch us in good ways. For example, we haven't had a lot of dialog on the uses of technology in the sciences, and I added Chemistry and Biology to our "tag" lists because of this.
For example, we haven't had a lot of dialog on the uses of technology in the sciences, and I added Chemistry and Biology to our "tag" lists because of this.

Here are some suggestions to make best use of the Classroom 2.0 resource.

1. Check the "find interesting discussions" tag links on the right side of every page, and see if there are already discussion threads that will provide you with some good answers. For instance, Justin Anderson asked about history resources, and there are a couple of discussions that he'll want to look here that will be helpful. And don't forget to look at those tags for tagging your own discussions.

2. If someone has started a discussion on a topic (like slavery), it will be easiest to add your interest to their post, so that the discussion doesn't have to take place in multiple discussion threads.

3. Be aware that many of the original members of Classroom 2.0 teachers have been teaching without technology for a long time, and they might not have Web 2.0 or technology resources for a topic. You may be breaking new ground, so be sure to keep the discussions updated with what you have found.
It's hard for me to imagine someone more interesting to interview than Marc Andreessen. Marc was one of the co-authors of the original web browser, has a history in the Free and Open Source Software movement, and now is one of the founders of the "build-your-own" social networking site Ning. The Classroom 2.0 social network I set up on Ning has really helped to galvanize my thoughts on the substantial contributions that I think social networking will have in education, both for student use and for teacher professional development.

Marc is not only fascinating to listen to, he's also a true gentleman--you may notice a skip in the recording, which is where my recording software failed in our original interview. Marc was kind enough to re-record the second half of our discussion some days later. His comments on the future of blogs and social networks toward the end are challenging and insightful, and his descriptions of the qualities he looks for in employees could provide a great platform for discussion on the skills we teach in schools (see also his blog post on this).

I also owe to Marc my first experience editing Wikipedia. I've been a huge wiki user and lover for quite a while, but I'd never actually played in the "big leagues" by editing Wikipedia. When I was researching Marc for the interview, I noticed that a couple of the links on his Wikipedia were broken, so I fixed them. I have to admit to feeling a little thrill editing Wikipedia...

For a related interview, Marc's business partner at Ning is Gina Bianchini, and you can find my recent interview with her here.
