The Trouble With Kids These Days

In his comment to my post about calculator use, Robb Ponton included some links to YouTube videos on this very subject. (Thanks, Robb!) One of these--Math Education: An Inconvenient Truth--featured M.J. McDermott, a meteorologist for a news station in Seattle, criticizing the reform math c… Continue

Do We Really Need to Learn to Carry the One?

I've been writing this post in my head all week and was going to post it to In Another Place, my other blog, but it seems a good way to get started at Classroom 2.0. Twice this past week, I heard two different people make essentially the same statement: the rise in the use of calculators has contributed to the deterioration of math skills in students. Hey Karen!
Just wanted to let you know that Sandy Adams and I (we both attended your workshop on Digital Storytelling for VBCPS this spring) collaborated on several projects as a result of your course. Her reading students created these wonderful MovieMaker pieces on "illustrating" vocabulary terms. We also used Tech4Learning's Frames software to create animated "stories" on cause and effect. The kids were so creative! Thanks so much!

Karen, We should really talk. A professor of mine once said that if doctoral students were smart they'd find ways to collaborate on dissertations. I'm looking at social studies teachers. But the lit. reviews will be very similar.

If you want you can send me your contact information to ap at pass-ed dot com.
