The research paper

Wel, it's been a while since i've written anything here, but i've been keeping up with everything as best i can. A lot of major things going on in my life at the moment keeping me from the net and what have you, though it hasn't been easy. Anyway, I finished my paper on the pros and cons of using the web in the classroom and what have you. Once I figure out where I can store it, I will give you all a link to it so you can take a look at it. Honestly, I have a lot more work ahead of me in resear… Continue

On my Research

Well I haven't had a chance to blog in ages because I have been keeping myself very busy. Almost too busy. A lot of my buds from college look to me at times and ask me how I do it. I don't even know sometimes.

Okay, well more or less I was starting to progress in my research and then the end f the quarter came where I work. end of the quarter as you all means chasing around students to get their past work in (for absences right before the end of the quarter) and getting those midterms…

The beginning of my research

The following was written the beginning of September. We were asked to start coming up with ideas of what we wanted to do for our research, in my grad level class. Now I will be honest, I found it a bit wierd to do this, since it was a grade level course, but I am thankful that the research advisor had us do this.

Lucas,

Hi, this is Kevin. Hope your summer is going well and you had some time to relax.

I've started a new Ning network for Middle School Science Teachers and I thought you might like to join as you are also a m.s. science teacher. I thought it would be really good to have just middle school science teachers share some of their labs, demos, concerns, what works and what doesn't about teaching this level. Hope to see you there.

Thanks, Kevin

When looking at using an LMS with students I think the key is having them have to login with a real account tied to them. At that point you do have to 'monitor' posts and the like, but no more than you would lunch room conversation. The key is that if they do something wrong they will get a 'punishment' for it just like if they do something wrong in a class or study hall.

I would call you a downstate teacher... you are only up from the city... and down from almost all the rest of the state.

I would not say that I prefer an LMS, but I see so many people heading with the heard towards 'Blogs' that I want to point out that there are LMS solutions available as well. To be fair if I was picking an LMS vs. a Blog I would pick the LMS (or a portal type solution) as those include Blogs and would give me room to grow vs. a blog that would never be anything more.

Blogs are usually for better suited for lecture - thought style interactions, forums are better for free flowing discussions, chats are live... each type of presentation has a strength and a weakness... so having all of them to choose from is a good thing.

Hi, I'm still doing a lit review. I have to finish reading this week and then organise the tasks/blogs.
I'm also going to use blogging in a class setting. I'll look at motivation, group interaction etc. I think I'll run it like an online journal - I'll get them blogging, adding images, playing with widgets and then choose (as a group) the best entries and post them on a central blog. That way they we can talk about content and look at issues around literacy.
The group is low achieving with a number of issues with literacy and a real dislike towards writing.
The research will be on the effects of the blooging on their attitudes and achievements and issues raised when using the blogs. I'll use a mixture of questions on a form and interviews at the start middle and end.

Hi Lucas,
Science and blogging...How are you using it with students? I teach 8th grade science in NH. My students will be starting their blogging shortly.
