The Google Experiment

2 weeks ago I started looking at all the little links that started popping up within Google. The one that got me hooked was iGoogle (life has never been the same). Then Gmail and the list goes on, after 2 days of just playing, clicking here, linking there, downloading the latest little gadget, putting a theme in iGoogle, I asked myself what could all this be used for. 2 weeks later, I am knee deep in developing a Social Studies Unit for LAP students that utilizes multimedia technology provided o… Continue

I'm enjoying the banter in regards to your "...too far too fast?" question.

Indigo comes from the tech side and he always has a pretty good perspective on things. I come from the veteran teacher perspective and I'm getting really intolerant of whiners!! Glad to see you around. N.

If you do decided to use an ARG (summer break would be an excellent time to set one up) let me know and I can assist.

An ARG would be built by constructing an elaborate puzzle for people to solve -- group work encouraged. You can use websites, Google search results, posters in the hallway, a cryptic note left on the board, or a combination of all of them. Read the base wiki article I linked - it does a good job of explaining the concept.

The basic concept for education would be less viral marketing and more viral learning. The keys are to make the game fun and have a 'reward' and then make them apply knowledge to progress (and learn along the way).

I did a 'test' here with a few teachers and along the way they learned about Roman history, Cease Ciphers, WWI, Mussolini, Erwin Rommel, WWII, Enigma Boxes, and finally more recent military history.

As for the other conversation, healthy unfettered conversation, is the best way to move forward. If I ever come off too strong just let me know... I argue strongly, but really am willing to listen and reflect.

ARG's, from my experience, are more learning tools than exams... but we could always explore the idea of making them an exam.

If you are interested in creating an alternative reality game for your social studies class let me know -- I can work with you on it.
