For my global awareness lesson, I used globalschoolnet.org. They have a project called the global cyber fair, in which students conduct a computer based research project based on a topic relating to their community. For instance, a student could select the topic of "local music" to research in their community. They would then create a website or a video about the selected topic to a global site where the entire world can see it.

In my classroom, the students would start by selecting their topic, and then over the next several weeks, they will research their selected topics. The global project offers the students a chance to learn about their community in a creative way. After their project is complete, they will be looking at other projects completed by students all over the world. Students can gain a much more global view of education through this project.

Hello Greg. Interesting activity! I think that would be a great beginning of the year lesson to get the students familiar with "researching". I was wondering though where would the students get their information from about local music? Would you assign them a specific topic or area or would you let them choose? Also, does this activity help the students in reaching the Standards for music??

I love your activity! It is very different from others that I have read! I think it is a great idea to have students have different topics to research. I also like how you incorporated students creating their own website or video. That incorporates other technology in the lesson as well. I also like how the students will then look at other students projects from all over the world. I think students will get ideas for future projects and see so much creativity.

Greg,

I really like how you leverage the internet to enable the work of your students to have a global audience. I think that it's great that your students will be able to obtain feedback from such a wide range of sources. It sounds like your lesson will also demonstrate that there are many different perspectives to consider and content with when dealing with a global audience. Nice job!
