I chose to use epals for my global awareness project. This will be incorporated into a 3rd grade classroom. This project will follow a communication unit in our Treasures Reading Series. This project will be a great way to wrap up the unit. Students will be researching the continent of Australia. We will complete a KWL chart to record information throughout a 6 week time period. Students will be introduced to e-mail and how to construct an e-mail. They then will be assigned a pen pal to communicate with in a classroom in Australia. Students will be given a list of topics and writing prompts to spark their ideas when creating their e-mails. At the conclusion of the 6 weeks students will be completing a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting Australia to the United States. I feel this is a great way to increase global awareness in the classroom. I believe students will be very interested and engaged in this project.

I will be interesting to see the differences between the students in each classroom. Australia and the United States are  close allies with similar global fingerprints. We can often assume that we have more similarities than we realize.

Our common historical connections to Britain give us some similar traits, but our cultures are much different than many people realize.

Australia is a great choice for 3rd grade students because of the similar languages. It would be fun to see if any of the students continue their connections beyond the lesson and beyond the classroom.

I agree,

I have not used epals yet, but I think this would be a great project and learning experience for the students. I think it is a great way to incorporate technology into the classroom.
