I selected the Cyber Fair to complete my global assignment. Students will be researching environmental issues in their local area and creating a website or video showcasing the concern and ways to go about changing it or bringing more awareness to the issue. What makes this a global lesson is that students are posting their projects online so that students around the globe can comment and review it. Also, my students are required to respond and give feedback to other students on their projects as well. Not only are students interacting with each other across the globe but they are learning about environmental issues and concerns around the globe. The goal is that students can work together to solve these problems and be aware that similiar concerns are also issues in other parts of the world. This assignment fits perfectly inito my classroom because students are required to do research projects, written essays with a specific audience in mind, and presenting this information in a unique manner. So not only is my curriculum being followed but technology is being incorporated with 21st century skills and themes. I am so glad I researched this website! I am definitely going to try it out next year! I think that this type of research is more meaningful and exciting for my students to complete. They love bringing awareness to different kinds of issues.

Cyber Fair seems like a very unique assignment for students to be able to complete while expanding their thinking about real life issues.  I think anytime students can use the web for research and/or presenting information in a unique way is great.  This also reaches out to various types of learning styles.  Is Cyber Fair something that you think could be used in a first grade classroom with a lot of guidance or more for middle to upper grade levels?

I do not believe that there are any age requirements for the CyberFair. The only problem with the real young ones would be the reflection requirement for all participants. The CyberFair requires all of its participants to reflect on the process of researching and creating the project.

Dear Brittany,

This is an exciting and meaningful assignment for your students. I like that your students will be researching environmental issues in their own community and then showcasing the information to a global audience. Creating for a larger audience brings more credibility to the work. Students can exchange thoughts and ideas and collaboratively to come up with solutions. I am sure that this assignment will inspire a lot of creative ideas and critical thinking. What age your students and what subject do you teach?

I teach 6th grade English Language Arts in Maryland. My students love working together for a good cause. It's pretty awesome to see.

Cyber Fair sounds like a great idea!  Not only could students bring global awareness to a local issue, but they could see how a similar issue is being handled in another part of the world.  It can help students understand that, although they may be thousands of miles apart, they have many things in common.  Thank you for sharing!

Brittany,

I think you have a wonderful idea of connecting students to the environmental issues facing their community.  Brian G. had a similar topic for his Global Awareness project.  I think it is critical to make the connections between what is happening globally with decisions that contribute locally.

I supported a community based research program with the Army's eCybermission.  We focused on environmental and energy issues in our community.  I wanted to share with you an article from the Economist that I used.  It really drove home the problems globally that our decisions locally are having.  Students learned that spikes in comodotities mean pennies at the grocery store for us, yet could mean days without meals for their peers around the world.  As our energy and climate challenges grow, its important that we help our learners to understand their roles in contributing to and solving these problems.  Thanks for picking such an important topic.

Brittany,

Using Cyber Fair sounds like a really good idea! Your activity seems like it would be great in any classroom.  I really like how you are making your students become aware of environmental issues in your community and having them post about them on line so they may shed light on the problem and let other people know how they can help.  This is something that I would like to use in my classroom.  I never thought of doing something like. It allows the children to see what is going on in their community and what they need to do to help.

Andrea

This Cyber Fair sounds very exciting and age appropriate. I like how you said that the students would respond to their feedback that they receive from across the globe. This is a great way for the students to practice research and publishing. I feel that the students will really take ownership of this project because they get to pick their issue and they will be proud of their work when they receive feedback from other students!
