Office 2.0

If a school truly could become paperless, what would it look like? Let's start just a bit smaller than that...what would the principal's office look like?

As part of my Campus Improvement Plan, I have added a goal of reducing the amount of paperwork required of my staff. I will discuss this more fully as we get a discussion started.

I'm looking for out-of-the box thinking.

I'm positive that proper modeling of creative technologies will set an example for staff and students. Let's discuss, dream, and design. I really will try to implement things than funds and practicality allow.

I 'd recommend Google Apps for Education - this keeps it locally on your own servers for security and control. Click Google Apps for Education for more information. I'd use Google Docs for sharing documents, spreadsheets and forms that more than one person needs to access and edit and contribute to - keep things electronic as far as possible within the scope of regulations. (At least in my state, there are still regs that require hard copies of some paperwork.) (And yes, you will ALWAYS need impecably kept backups!)

I'd create a private wiki for staff and administrators - or a set of private wikis to use with each group.

I'd use e-mail and some type of chat (Google Apps for Ed has these too) - and Skype or Google Talk or some other type of video over IP solution to communicate. I'd use Google Sites to create web pages and encourage the teachers to learn to do the same.

Notice - all of these are FREE - time to learn and plan and do is required, but not money! (Yeah, I know, I'm a Google fan and most definitely, a FREEBIE fan. In today's situation, I think it makes sense to see what's out there that is free and workable first and then see what you need to add that has a fee attached.)
