For the Global Awareness Lesson, I selected a global citizens activity from ePals Global Community, entitled "ePals Care: Tornadoes Hit the Midwest of the U.S."  This activity talks about the most recent tornado that swept through Moore, Oklahoma on May 20th.  This site allows students to let the people in Oklahoma know that they are thinking about them in a forum.  It also teaches students about tornadoes, how to prepare for natural disasters and features various videos on preparedness and facts.  As Dir. of Curriculum and Instruction, I wrote this lesson with my social studies department in mind; however, I would encourage all teachers to engage in the activities all year or for as many lessons as needed as the ePals Global Community is an excellent site for all subjects and grade levels.  For example: the writing center and email could be used in ELA; science section for Science; ePals could communicate in Spanish class; ePals share math and money/currency in Math class; correspond about various world sports and games in PE; share the latest and greatest technologies in Computers; share digital photos and videos and expressions of art and music through Art and Music ePals; and history, civics, geography and economics could be shared between ePal social studies classes.  With global communication and collaboration, learning is endless!

This is such a great topic.  I agree this lesson would be good for social studies but also good for science class.  A science teacher in my school is writing a curriculum for a meteorology class.  I do all the news announcements in my school and we are hoping to add a weather portion to the newscast.  How interesting it would be to be able to be able to examine tornadoes in a new way using ePals Global Community.  The use of digital photos and maps would really allow students be be engaged in what they are learning and expand knowledge with collaboration.  Cool!
