The activity I selected to use for my global assignment involved having my students become ePal’s with another student.  During the lesson, my students will connect with students that live in another country and learn about their life, culture and customs.  The lesson essential questions are: 1. How are children from other cultures similar and/or different from me? 2. How can we use technology to research information about cultures around the world?  The students will send a series of emails to their ePal’s and will ask and answer specific questions. They will record their findings in a journal.  After our email communication has ended (we will only do it over 2 weeks), students will begin their research assignment using the information they learned from their ePal’s.

Hi Laura! Your activity sounds just like mine! I also used ePals for a research project. Students had to complete research and then use ePals to "interview" their pen-pal from that country. Once their research was done, they created a blog to share their findings.

Sounds like a worthwhile assignment for your students.  I also considered doing something with ePals.  I think it is a great way for students to connect with others and take an interest in their culture and customs.  I also like the follow up questions you chose.  It would also be interesting for students to share something interesting they learned about their ePal with the class.

Laura,

I also chose to use ePals for my global awareness activity. I chose ePals because I loved how interactive it was, but also a safe way for students to use the Internet and technology to communicate with other students across the world. I think the students will be excited about this project so they will really internalize the information. I like how you had the students to record the information in a journal. Along with discussing with students, I think that writing the information will help them remember the information as well. I also liked how you are having students continue to research after their emailing conversation.
