Skype 5.1 new dowload with many extras

Video from CEO Skype 5.1 Jan 2011

The opening day of CES 2011 was a banner day for Skype announcements and activity. It started with a morning press conference where new Skype CEO Tony Bates built his message around the themes of “Universal, Useful. Wonderful”:

He covered recent Skype activity and accomplishments:

  • International Long Distance Minutes 2010From the recent Skype outage, they learned much about Skype’s pervasiveness and users’ reliance on Skype as a critical real time communications service in addition to addressing the technical issues that led to the outage.
  • In its annual report on international long distance minutes by service provider, Telegeography had reported earlier in the day that, in 2010, Skype had increased its market share of international calling minutes from 12% in 2009 to 24.7% in 2010. This represents an average of 520 million minutes per day and over 190 billion minutes for the year.
  • Video calling has increased to 40% of all calls in 2010.
  • When Skype for iPhone 3.0 launched last week, it triggered over 4 million downloads on the Apple app store and over 1 million Skype mobile video calls on the first day.

There is another site called BoostCam. You enter the site and your chat partner enters, then you e-mail them the numbers in the url and they change theirs to match yours and you can have a good connection. Nothing to download either.

Hi Grace
Thanks for the comments. Did it work better with v-room Learn Central?
I was thinking about an interview. I also read the tutorials this chat room provides and although enlightning and really good but I feel intimidated to start.

I live in Peru and have used Skype to conferece with the States. We found that it is better to do it in the morning. We had trouble after 12 your time and we thought it might be due to increased traffic on the internet at times when many countries are having lunch. We could not maintain the connection all the time but if we did it in the mroning around 10, it worked great. We are also now using learncentral's free v-room to see if it is more stable.

Hi
I teach Spanish in a small rural community in Iowa, USA. I never used Skype in the classroom. My advanced group is studying Chile, and I would like to have an interview through Skype with a lady from Chile. But I would like to be aware of bumps that can happen before the event. What experiences does anybody have with language classes using Skype?
Thank you very much
Esther vieira
