I have just done a search for free hosted LMS solutions and here are the results:

wordcircle
Tutorom
LectureShare
KEEP Toolkit
eLearningCommunity
edu 2.0
ECTO
NineHub - FREE Moodle Hosting
Docebo
Dokeos
Yacapaca

I will try to evaluate these offerings and provide mini-reviews in this thread. If anyone has used some of these tools please post your experiences.

Does www.hotchalk.com fall under this category? A colleague told me about it and I have used it a couple of times just to play around with it. I have a website that I use but it expires in April and I am looking for a FREE replacement :]

It looks like it does. I will sign-up for an account and review it in the next day or so.

Thank you for sharing and volunteering to evaluate free hosting options and LMS solutions. I would add afmu for free hosting for Moodle and learnhub for LMS solutions.

It was fun to do; I just hope it helps people as they move forward. I will try to take a look at these.

There was a review of Edu2.0 done by The Journal. The link is:

http://www.thejournal.com/articles/22456_2

Here's a quote:

Edu2.0 is a spectacular example of a learning community done right in terms of the technological sophistication and depth and breadth of resources available. It offers a complete Web-based learning management system for public and private teaching, more than 10,000 shared online resources, and a range of networking and collaboration features--wikis, blogs, feeds, chat, etc. And it also includes assessments, attendance logs, grading, assignments, and many other features found in traditional learning management systems but without the cost of commercial systems and without the hassle of implementing an LMS from scratch. There is no cost for Edu2.0, and there is no advertising on the site. And, unlike many social sites out there, Edu2.0 is easy on the eyes and on the brain.

He ends with:

Edu2.0 is really the standout in broad-based learning communities.

Since the site it free, I figured you wouldn't mind a little self-promotion ;-)

Cheers,
Graham

Thank you so much for this most helpful dialogue. I am in search of a free, hosted learning management system, and this forum has been most helpful. It appears that both Edu 2.0 and ECTO may meet my needs. They both look so good; I have a difficult decision ahead of me. Thanks again everyone.

No problem I hope one of those two work well for you.

Andrew,

I use Moodle (CMS) which is free, LearnHub, and WiZiQ.

Let me know if you would like a demo.

Nellie:

LearnHub and WiZiQ look good... is LearnHub a student pay only (they mentioned selling on-line learning). I will try to do a review of these two... it may be time to make another blog entry with all of the new entries listed, reviewed and summarized with the old ones.

I notice you are extending your remit to cover services that specialize in excellence in one area of elearing. Yacapaca specializes in K-12 assessment, and I believe does it better than any of the LMSs in your list. If you feel it is appropriate, I would be delighted to see your review of Yacapaca.

I have some time over the next few days to review the site. Please feel free to send me a private message here if there are parts you wish me to focus on.
