Hi all,

I wanted to let everyone know about a new collaborative learning application on Facebook that I launched last week. It's called Study Groups, and has the following features:

* Scheduling for classes, discussion sections, and group meetings
* Discussion boards for problem set groups, online tutoring, and virtual brainstorming
* Task lists so members of group projects can keep track of who's on what for when
* Document storage so your class assignments, notes, and courseworks are now accessible from anywhere
* Privacy and security so only you and people you've invited to your study group can access your notes, documents, and ideas

Check it out at:
http://apps.facebook.com/studygroups/

I'd love to hear everyone's feedback on the application. It's currently targeted at students, but we're working on functionality to bring teachers and professors into the equation, as well as the ability to create and browse public study groups. We're happy to work with your ideas if you think this kind of application could be useful.

Are there any features you offer that surpass Blackboard utilties? It sounds like Blackboard offers the same abilities for students at schools that have Blackboard accounts.

Sharon - while our application is somewhat similar to Blackboard, we're not trying to be a heavy-weight content- or learning-management system. Instead, we're trying to bring simple, easy-to-use e-learning activities onto a website/platform that students are already using - Facebook. We've found that many students have found it useful to start up a Study Group quickly and easily and have been able to actually get their peers to log in and use the application.

This sounds so cool. I hope it will be available to teachers by the time I start teaching

Wow! I think that this app would get used a lot if people knew more about it. This is the first time i have ever heard of it and I have a facebook account.

Hi Dave!!
I tried to have a look at it but Facebook says that the app is down and to come back in a few day? I'm looking forward to trying this out with my English students. I hope it's up and running soon :-D

This looks like it could be an excellent tool, especially for the facebook addicts. I also think it could be useful for professional development or creating casual workshops (or posting materials from a workshop) online. I could see it being particulary useful in something like TFA, where if a teacher couldn't participate in a regional conference, they would be able to get online and work through the same workshops that would have been available. I'd have to try to use it to know how well it would really work, but being a blackboard like application tucked in Facebook, I think it could have a postive impact.
