Greetings! I al an elementary media specialist who would like to start podcasting with some elementary classes. Once we create the audio file, can anyone tell me where we can upload it? We have a school website with grade level pages - can we upload podcasts to a school website, or do we need to upload them to other places? This is our first venture into this territory and the teacher and I are feeling a bit overwhelmed. Thanks for any advice. It is much appreciated!

Blip was an option for me but I found that my district would not allow it through the "wall" because of the fact that it has other content. One of the issues you have to consider is if your district will block it due to the other content on the site if you are going to have it accessed in school. Just something to think about.

This is why I honestly think that it is best to use inexpensive web hosting if you cannot put it up on the school website. You will have no advertising, total control, and it is extremely unlikely that you will have problems with the school's filter. You will not be working with a site that is associated with inappropriate content.

We actually transferred our website from BOCES to shared hosting. We have saved a bundle, and have the ability to deploy almost anything thing we can imagine.

It is inexpensive, and much easier than you may think.

What a great handout!! Thanks for sharing...

Nick
The handout is helpful but I think it is teacher-centered.
Maybe it would be helpful to have a more student-centered handout, too, on ways that students expand audience, work with "voice," use technology effectively and other content-driven goals.
(I am not suggesting you do that for us, Nick, just that it would be nice -- maybe I need to do it, just for reflection for my own work in the classroom)
Thanks for sharing

Yes, its a great suggestion made by you. Being a teacher, I have realised the potential of web technology and its incorporation in teaching learning. In my previous session , I took the voice explanations of project work done by my students of grade 10 in mathematics. It was an enriching experience for me. My podcast house is http://mykhmsmathclass.mypodcast.com

I am looking for a free podcast hosting site and came across your recommendation of mypodcast and saw that they include ads. My question is do YOU have control over the ad. Since this is educational, can I pick ads that are geared to my kids or might I wind up with a beer ad at the end of my history review.

You don't need any special podcasting site. If you want control your content, you need to control the site. Get a little piece of a server for $5/mo or so, load WordPress (usually done with a couple keystrokes and mouse clicks), and embed the media in the posts.

You will be able to do so much more than just podcasts and you won't get blindsided by inappropriate content or a change of terms of service. Once you go this route, you will never look back! If that's too pricey, get a few teachers together. In most cases that account could accommodate 5 teachers. We have a $15 plan that covers out whole (small) school--Podcasts, wikis, blogs, and more.

Do you use a Mac or PC? We are looking at the PC side and need recommendations on the best way to accomplish this. Audacity?

We used Audacity and it was a snap! Of course we had to have the IT guy d/l the software.

It doesn't matter whether you use a Mac or a PC. You can work with sound using Audacity. It is no different than installing any other software. You can record and edit with it, then export an mp3 and you have a sound file.

You rent server space on a webhost and a domain. The host can usually manage this for you. WordPress is a push button install. This may sound complicated, but is not.

Start simple with blogs and work your way up.

It's worth doing! Let me know if you need help.

Our school site is through SchoolWires and has a podcast page module which is very easy to use. As everyone has said, I would check with your tech folks to see the capability if you have a site. If not, they can look into some of these. I have my podcasts om my site www.masterymaze.com which is an opensource site created in Drupal. I set it up because I was creating podcasts in Camtasia Studio and they were not running well on the school server. You may be best finding an online service such as Screencast.com or others suggested here and set up an account and run them from there.

Good Luck! Do not despiar. It takes awhile but they are worth it. My students really benefit from podcasts. Take a look at mine in the Subjects pages of my site to get an idea.
